This study examines effects of how life-stress affects gambling behavior and verifies whether self-control can control the effects. Surveys aiming at 241 students attending 5 universities in Gangwon province were conducted to attain the purpose of this study. Using SPSS 18.0; frequency analysis, t-test and correlation analysis were conducted for the statistical processing and hierarchical regression analysis was conducted to verify the regulating-effect of self-control. The followings are the results.
First, as the result of the examining the level of university students' gambling issue, the entire subjects' prevalence rate of gambling addiction appeared 9.6%. Furthermore, female subjects' medium risk gambling rate also appeared 6%. We find that the gambling issue isn't a simple problem for just male students but prevailed in the entire university students.
Second, in terms of the difference of gambling behavior resulted in individual attribute of university students, it has correlation with gender and smoking habit respectively. Male and smoking subjects do more gambling rather than female and non-smoking ones.
Third, a college student living in stress and self control of gambling behavior that appeared to be affecting.
Fourth, in terms of the relation between gambling behavior and life-stress of the university students, it appears that the sub factors of self-control, which are impulsivity, ego-centrism and temperament, regulate gambling behavior and the statistics show the same way.
Through the above findings, suggestions can be proposed as follows. First, as to the general attribute of university students, this study reveals that females as well as males have gambling behavior. The tendency for gambling behavior becomes higher especially when smoking and drinking. Therefore, the grasp of various addictions and the precaution against gambling behavior derived from it should be devised.
Second, we could figure out that the life-stress of university students has an effect on gambling behavior. Therefore, in order to reduce their gambling behavior, proficiency in how to control and manage life-stress effectively will be required.
Third, if university students enhance their self-control, gambling behavior derived from life-stress will not be connected into practical implementation. Thus, it is necessary to make them be capable of coping with the compulsion to gamble through conducting self-control enhancement program which intensifies response capability for psychological aspects and external environment. Since it appears that university students' psychological burden derived from task completion leads to gambling behavior, seeking the measure, which alleviates psychological pressure toward task completion positively, will be required.
Based on findings of this study, we consider further research for in-depth and various factors and preventive measures in relation to university students’ gambling behavior will be performed in the future.
