The purpose of this study is to alleviate the problems by expressing creative potential through art, to develop flexible problem-solving skills under various circumstances, and to find out the effects on creative arts activities on bicultural stress and the improvement of self elasticity in multicultural children.
The questions of this study are as follows.
First, what effects does creative arts activities have on the bicultural stress of children in multicultural families?
Second, what effects does creative arts activities have on the improvement of self elasticity in multicultural families?
The study was conducted among 9 children between the ages of 5 to 7 in multicultural families who attended the A local children's center located in Gyeongju, Gyeongsangbuk-do. It was carried out from April 3rd to 4th September in 2014 using bicultural stress test, self elasticity test, and K-HTP drawing test, including pre-test and post-test as well. Both pre and post test were performed each in April 24th and September 4th, and creative arts activities were carried out from May 1st to 28th August over 16 weeks for a total of 16 sessions(60 minutes each session, once a week).
To measure bicultural stress, SAFE of Hovey&King(1996) revised by No Chung-rae, Hong Jin-ju(2004) and Park Seon-hee(2009) was used, and edited version of measure of Park Eun-hee(1996) for children of multicultural families revised by Kim Eun-ju(2013) based on the study of O'Connell-Higgins(1983) and Block, Kremen(1996) was used as a test tool to judge self elasticity. And, K-HTP drawing test were compard and analyzed after pre-test and post-test. Accumulated research data were t-tested by using SPSS 17.0 statistical program.
The results of this study are as follows.
First, it is shown that creative arts activities can have some effects on the reduction of bicultural stress of children in multicultural families. Positive results were shown in Children in multicultural families understanding their parent's countries and their foreign mothers as well as accepting both cultures and feeling proud of themselves.
The bicultural stress score before the test was 24.80(4.158), and the score after the test was 18.60(3.893). It shows that the result of t-test was t=7.619(p<0.001) and there was a significant difference. After the test, the level of bicultural stress of the children who participated in the study was lower.
Second, creative arts activities can have some effects on the improvement of self elasticity of children in multicultural families. Children in multicultural families were sparked curiosity, interest and creativity by participating in creative arts activities and enjoying the whole process at the same time. And also, through the cooperative team work, children are able to considerate of others, feel responsibility for activities as well as confidence, and liberally solve problems under various circumstances. Those results proves that the improvement of self elasticity which consists of vitality, emotion control, relationship, proprioception, and optimism.
The score of self elasticity before the test was 75.44(11.801) and that after the test was 94.78(6.759). It shows the result of t-test was t=-2.858(p<0.05) and there was a significant difference. The result of the self elasticity 8 out of 9 children who participated in this test was better.
These results show that creative arts activities have effects on the reduction of bicultural stress and the improvement of peer relation of children in multicultural families. Thus creative arts programs and educations for the children in multifultural families are needed, and used actively in education field following a shift in public awareness about multicultural society.
