This study aims to identify if cross-fit participants’ behavioral intention can be explained by attitude, subjective norm, and recognized behavioral control based on the theory of planned behavior(TPB) and if there is a gender difference in the causal effects of three preceding variables.
As subjects of this study, cross-fit participants who participated in ‘Reebok Spartan Race’ held for two days from Oct. 18 to Oct. 19, 2014 were selected as parent population and among them, 410 were sampled with convenient sampling method. To them, questionnaires were distributed. 375 questionnaires except 35 copies that their responses were determined to be omitted or reliability was considered to be low were utilized as final data.
For statistical treatment, Window SPSS 21.0 and AMOS 21.0 were used, and to verify the reliability and validity of variables used in this study, exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis(CFA) and reliability analysis were conducted. To identify the general characteristics, frequency analysis was conducted. MANOVA was conducted to identify any difference in predicting variables (attitude, subjective norm, recognized behavioral control, and behavioral intention) for cross-fit behavioral intention depending on gender. AMOS 21.0 was utilized for evaluating suitability of research hypotheses and research models set in this study and hypothesis verification and then confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), correlation analysis, and structural equation model (SEM). Also, to prove hypothesis 3, multigroup analysis was performed using structural equation model.
As a result, it was found that there was a difference in behavioral intention between groups in terms of a difference in predicting variables (attitude, subjective norm, recognized behavioral control, and behavioral intention) for cross-fit participatory behavior depending on gender and that behavioral intention appeared higher in female participants than in male participants. Furthermore, cross-fit participants’ attitude, subjective norm, and recognized behavioral control based on the theory of planned behavior had a positive (+) impact on behavioral intention. Conclusively, it was found that the theory of planned behavior was useful for predicting participatory behavior among cross-fit participants. Finally, the impact of preceding variables in the theory of planned behavior depending on gender difference on cross-fit behavioral intention was investigated.
Among the three preceding variables, what represented a gender difference in the impact on cross-fit behavioral intention was recognized behavioral control only. The causal relation of recognized behavioral control -> behavioral intention appeared higher in females than in males.
In conclusion, this study is expected to help female participants identify their psychological needs so that cross-fit can be a more popular and universal sports activity encompassing gender difference and subsequently differentiated marketing strategy seems to be necessary.
