Collections in art museums are key essential elements for reflecting on the past, present, and future. Thus each art museum collection should have a precise measuring standard that determines the identity of that particular museum.
Today each art museum as well as its artwork must let users access and identify much desired information very precisely, and thus, the museum must consider how best to provide detailed information on its art records. Despite the large amount of work related to art production, in recent years there has been a need to manage museum records associated with the art world, art interests, and art awareness, as the art archives in different fields have increased substantially.
This study suggests a solution is to undertake national and international Art archives records management using metadata elements and art records management international standard metadata elements. They can provide easy- to- record user access to the art. The study proposes metadata scheme function-based elements and the main features of metadata records for art to secure more beneficial interoperability. Managing the art records systematically can catalogue the full scope of the art in any Art record Archive and how it is both defined and recorded using four main functional areas.
This metadata scheme function-based element is the topic for the Daejeon Museum of Art in Korea. The Daejeon Museum of Art is currently collecting a case study on the Lim, Bong-Jae collection where the art record has been limited in its scope. The study addresses part of the Lim, Bong-Jae collection, as Art record metadata function elements (agenda) for the Daejeon Museum of Art suggest. The results of the function-based metadata description element analysis in this study are:
First, when an art record is classified as a collection or series, the elements show the distinction of the items that are needed to create art metadata records. Secondly, the metadata associated with this particular Art record building needs to place additional emphasis on those factors associated with actual functional areas, so that users can more easily access both the museum and its collection. Lastly, linking related metadata records among the art records of the same level in C-S-I hierarchy and referencing higher or lower levels of art records in the hierarchy can provide more number of access points to users.
This study can be recognized as an exploratory case study of applying metadata functional models on a specific art archive. The more in-depth and systematic approaches can be executed to generalize the case of this study and to develop standardized metadata schema which is customized for national art archives in Korea.
