Adolescence is the period where people explores what differentiates
themselves and what they really want for their lives. According to Carl
Gustav Jung, happiness means a process of individuation, and the best
success is to express this individuality. The most guaranteed way to lead a
happy life is, among many others, to select the most appropriate work and
to satisfy with doing the job. Thus, choosing right career for each
individual is one of the most important elements determining one's
happiness.
One of the biggest stresses that Korean teenagers have is the troubles
from which career they should take in the future. Nowadays, regardless of their social classes, people tend to choose their career without any rational
consideration about one's aptitude, interest, personality, social environment,
etc. As a result, many students still made mistakes when they face the
necessary decision to select their academic major. This is because all
educational focus was centralized on the acceptance from better colleges, and
the educational guidance for students' future career still ignores the reality.
This study conducted a survey on 7th grade students to figure out
the students' understanding of their future career, and their consciousness
on choosing career and career education. The result suggests as follows.
On students' understanding of their future career, many students
understand their own aptitude and interest, and often think about their
future career. The most important standard in choosing job was turned out
to be their aptitude and interests. Many students chose parents and family,
and mass media (internet, newspaper, or TV) as the main source of
information about their career. The career information was mostly from
their parents and family, and more specific information about job market
was obtained from mass media. The less income their household has, the
more they found the job information from mass media. There was a
difference between male and female students in what troubles them for
choosing their career. Most students recognized the importance of career
information, so they demanded that it should have been provided when
they were 5th to 6th grade. They chose the most effective way of career
education as utilizing the extracurricular activities, and preferred the
invitation of the relevant experts. Also, students' biggest trouble was about
their grades and their future career. The less family income they have, the
more they were troubled by their family rather than their individual
problems.
To help teenagers to choose their career by rational thinking and
preparation, first, there should be career education integrated into the
regular curriculum, which help students recognize, understand, and explore
their individuality, by adopting different curriculums appropriate to the
each developmental stage from elementary school. The earlier preparation
for individual's career would save individual and nation costs. Second,
there should be more organic network among household, school, and local
community on the issues about the career. This responds to the growing
importance in the role of school and local community as nuclear and
double-income families increase. Third, more motivational career education
is required to give hope and challenges to the youths. This is because
individuals need to differentiate themselves as society is getting more
professionalized and specialized.
