    ABSTRACT
A Study on the Experience of Bibliotherapy
on Pastoral Children to Improve Their Self-identity
    Yang, Eun Hwa
    Master of Arts in Counseling
    Graduate School of Counseling
    Seoul Theological University
This research purports to investigate the effects of bibliotherapy
on ministers’ children. It wants to uncover the relationship between the
therapy and the improvement of their self-identity while the research is
conducted. It records the volunteers’ experience and reactions during the
course. While applying Colaizzi’s phenomenal methodology, volunteers
underwent once a week for 2-3 hours of the therapy session for 8 weeks.
The volunteers were chosen from two different ways: first, 5
volunteers were selected from Facebook’s website, called WPK, World
Pastors’ Kids, ran from November 23, 2011 to January 8, 2012, and second,
the additional 2 volunteers were introduced from the first 5 members.
The data were collected from January 10, 2012 to February 28,
2012 based on their narratives from the participants. The researcher
analyzed the data through Colaizzi’s phenomenal methodology and the
results were verified by three PhD’s in counseling. Through the research,
15 thematic groups emerged and remedy for each.
    1. The participants realized the majority of their confusion and
low-esteem was originated from outside sources, such as their
church and family. Upon the realization, they strived for the
    recovery of self-identity.
    2. Since their children, the children had faced enormous expectations
and absence of their parents. These factors left scars on their
self-identity. Thus, they realized the necessity of the therapy.
    3. They began to accept themselves and their family members as
they are through process of self-discovery.
    4. Through writing, their thoughts of resentment had subdued much
and gained self-identity. Moreover, they gained self-confidence to
    embrace others around them.
    5. Through writing about the relationship with their mothers, they
realized they had been influenced much by the love-hate
relationship with their mothers. They transformed their lives to
    more positively.
    6. They often identified themselves with the main characters in the
book and it brought the effects of emotional remedy and
    self-discovery.
    7. They were encouraged by the therapists’ comments and discovered
the causes of their resentment, so to effectively begin the healing
    process and growth.
    8. Their needs and thoughts had been long ignored due to others
church members’ expectations. Through the therapy, their focuses
had been shifted to themselves. They began to respect their needs
more and their values were transformed.
    9. Through the therapy, they discovered God’s grace and blessings in
their sojourn of lives. Their emotional scars were begun to heal.
    Their faith deepened.
Their self-identity grew, through the bibliotherapy, I was able to
witness the progress of the changes in their self-identity and through their
confessions, I was record the effects in details.
The bibliotherapy had one common theme : Ministers’ children
need not to depend on other people’s opinions on them and to accept
themselves as they are. Their existence is unique and special. Through
reading and writing therapy, they dealt with their identities and discovered
their emotional scars in the past had some special meanings in their lives.
In the end, they began the healing process. Before their emotional scars
had negative impact on their lives, but through the therapy, they became
the sources of improving self-identity. They could uniquely identify
themselves in the community of Christ.
I hope my research can lay the foundation for the bibliotherapy in
Korea’s future studies in healing to cure ministers’ children’s low
    self-identity.
