    ABSTRACT
    Group Bibliotherapy
to Relieve the Adolescents of Their Negative
    Emotions
    Choi, Kyoung Hui
    Master of Arts in Counseling
Seoul Theological University, the Graduate School of Counseling
This research examines the effects and progress on the negative
emotions of some adolescent subjects who have gone through group
bibliotherapy. Keeping in mind that psychological anxieties such as anger,
depression, fear etc. arising from negative emotions have tendencies to
reduce happiness and emotional stability, catharsis as a result of
expression of emotions and the understanding of the processes involved in
the relief of negative emotions have come to be considered quite crucial.
In order to investigate more in depth, the set of phenomena observed in
the group bibliotherapy of adolescents, this research applies Colaizzi’s
phenomenological approach and Carl Rogers’ phenomenological personality
theory and aims to verify the effects and need for the group bibliotherapy
for the sake of relieving the adolescents of their negative emotions.
The subjects involved in this research are a total of eight(8) adolescent
boys and girls studying in 3rd grade of middle school, who in
pre-examination, have shown significant results of anxiety, depression,
anger etc. in their emotions. Each group bibliotherapy consisted of
identification (reading as a way of therapy), catharsis (epilogue),
expression (activities) followed by introspection (writing as a way of therapy) and the process of relieving the negative emotions in accordance
with the data analysis by the participants consisted of four stages, namely,
identification (problem cognition), catharsis (emotional response stage),
introspection (problem solving) and application (self-implementation). The
data from in-depth interview as a part of the bibliotherapy, participant
observation, book report activities, pictures drawn by the subjects etc.
were recorded and analyzed after each therapy session and the following
eleven topics and twenty-seven eight treatment factors have been obtained.
Topic 1. I experiences an identification.
    Topic 2. I experiences a catharsis.
Topic 3. One can better understand oneself and can experience a new
    level of introspection.
Topic 4. One is more comfortable with oneself and is able to better
    accommodate others.
Topic 5. I practice telling what I want to say to the people who hurt
    me.
Topic 6. I experience again the injury which was done in my childhood.
Topic 7. One can feel oneself being relived of negative emotions such as
    anger, sadness etc.
Topic 8. By learning to better accommodate others, identifying with and
encouragement and supporting others, one can experience
positive changes in oneself and be happy.
Topic 9. I experience the promotion of interpersonal enhancement.
Topic 10. One can start looking at oneself in a more positive manner
and design the future, hope, happiness improvement.
Topic 11. One can appreciate the importance of family and gratitude.
The subject adolescents were able to experience identification, catharsis,
introspection after reading various literary works dealing with conflicts
among siblings and reconciliation, apologies and forgiveness, sorrow etc.
and moreover, they were able to recognize and understand the
psychological difficulties they were suffering from, as a result of the state
of their negative emotions. Through the combined therapeutic approach of group bibliotherapy and art therapy, the subject adolescents were more
comfortable with expressing themselves and they were also able to
simultaneously experience positive emotional changes such as better
understanding of others, identifying with others. From the above results, it
can be inferred that therapeutic results are more beneficial and greater
when auxiliary methods such as texts which are the basics of
bibliotherapy, writing poems or book reports and art therapy are utilized.
In the process, it has been verified that the mutual understanding and the
trusting relationship that has been forged among the participants and
researchers contributes to the more active interaction in the group.
The result of the analysis of the poems, reports, pictures etc. which
were either written or drawn by the participants during the group
bibliotherapy shows that there has been a drastic decrease in the negative
emotions and an increase in the positive emotions in the participants. Each
of the participants has realized the sense of self-worth, has experienced
contentment with oneself, enjoyment and happiness through mutual support
and better rapport; negative emotions such as anger, depression, fear,
grievance etc. were remarkably diminished. Each of the participants who
had these negative emotions locked up inside experienced catharsis by
openly expressing their emotions and started feeling comfortable with
oneself again. Further, they started looking at the world with newer and
more optimistic outlook; they became more grateful, more positive and
started planning future filled with hopes.
What is noteworthy in this research is that the group bibliotherapy has
not only served to relieve the subject adolescents of their negative
emotions but also has served as a path for emotional communication. It is
extremely important for adolescents to be fully aware of how they feel
and how to express themselves to maintain the state of their mental
well-being and their social adaptation. The openness to positively
accommodate and share adolescents’ emotions is expected to bring about
positive results in terms of their family, social and school lives by
increasing their emotional stability and the level of positive emotions.
