The 『Buljosamgyeong(佛祖三經)』is a book consisting of three sutras related to both the Buddha and a Buddhist patriarch. The 「 Bulseolsasipyijanggyeong(佛說四十二章經)」 and 「Bulyugyogyeong(佛遺敎經)」 sutras are related to the teachings of the Buddha, while the 「 Weisangyeongchaek(潙山警策)」 sutra was written by Weisan (潙山, 771-853) as an admonition to Buddhist priests. All three sutras focus on instructing Buddhist priests on right attitude and mind. Mongsan (蒙山, 1231-?) played an important role in the introduction of the Buljosamgyeong (佛祖三經) to the Goryeo Dynasty.
Various editions of the 『Buljosamgyeong(佛祖三經)』are located in Korea. Some kinds of edition are designated as National Heritages. It is believed that the 『Buljosamgyeong(佛祖三經)』was composed between the end of the Dang Dynasty and the early years of the Song Dynasty, with the objective of teaching religious precepts and Buddhist thoughts related to Patriarchal Zen(祖師禪). The extant printed editions of 『Buljosamgyeong(佛祖三經)』in Korea were annotated by Soosoo (守遂, 1072-1147) during the Song Dynasty and include a publisher’s preface written by Mongsan of the Won Dynasty. With the publication of this edition, it was introduced to the Goryeo Dynasty through the Won Dynasty.
The sutras of the 『Buljosamgyeong(佛祖三經)』 are closely connected to other sutras. For example, the 「Bulseolsasipyijanggyeong(佛說四十二章經)」 and the 「Bulyugyogyeong(佛遺敎經)」 are both related to Hinayana Buddhism, while the 「Weisangyeongchaek(潙山警策)」 is related to 『Chimungyeonghun(緇門警訓)』. From the end of the Goryeo Dynasty to the early years of the Joseon Dynasty, the 『Buljosamgyeong(佛祖三經)』was consistently published for the education of Buddhist priests. However, this book did not serve as a replacement to previous educational sutras and furthermore, it was not included in the official textbook for Korean Buddhist education at Kangwon.
Towards the end of the Joseon Dynasty, different versions, in addition to the established rendition of the 『Buljosamgyeong(佛祖三經)』, were published by woodblock. This situation was related to the fact that during this particular period, the end of the Joseon Dynasty, people set high value on both Mahayana Buddhism and Buddhist genealogy.
The versions of the 『Buljosamgyeong(佛祖三經)』that are still in existence can be divided into the printed editions from the Goryeo Dynasty, the early years of the Joseon Dynasty and the end of the Joseon Dynasty. The intent of this study is to show the correct way to organize its various printed editions, as well as how to avoid the problem of attaching incorrect information to bibliographical descriptions.
