The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of lesson with the application of Flipped Learning on science academic achievement and scientific attitude. The Flipped Learning helps them to learn the basic contents in advance according to their learning speed, and is a term meaning learning with interest and depth of study as a variety of activities in the class.
The study subjects were the four classes of 6th grades of H elementary school located in Gyeongsangbuk-do. The research group was composed of 50 students and the comparative group was composed of 50, too. The two groups were equivalent when pretests were conducted to assess their science academic achievement and scientific attitude. The research group received science instruction by applying Flipped Learning , and the comparative group took typical science lesson just according to a teacher’s guide. This study was proceeded for 8 weeks from April to May, 2014.
The results of this study are as follow:
First, the research group showed a statistically significant improvement in their science academic achievement compared to the comparative group. There were positive effects to improve students science academic achievement by the lessons with the application of Flipped Learning.
Second, the research group showed a statistically significant improvement in their scientific attitude compared to the comparative group. There were positive effects to improve students scientific attitude by the lessons with the application of Flipped Learning.
Third, this study conducted a survey research on steudents cognition on the lessons with the application of Flipped Learning. Many students had positive thoughts on these lessons and they could think about some scientific problems and the scientific technology. We need to make more methodical and organized Flipped Learning education programs.
Through this study, it is concluded that the lessons with the application of Flipped Learning are more effective on improving students science academic achievement, scientific attitude and cognition. Therefore, using Flipped Learning in lessons is an effective method in science education.
