The purpose of this study is to examine patterns and cultures of bone implements in the Iron Age in the Youngnam region by analyzing, classifying and investigating the changes in Bone Implement excavated in the ruins by periods and regions.
First, we divide the ruins where bone implements were excavated into three regions such as Sacheonman region, Nakdong River downstream region and Keumho River region and examine the distribution patterns. We also examine the location of ruins and the ironware excavated from the ruins. Next, we analyze the materials of hand knife, carved antler, bone arrowhead, fish hook, harpoon, spear, pricker, pendant, hair-pin, hair ornament and oracle bone. Once we analyze the properties of bone implements excavated from the ruins, we classify each relic. Thus, we classify the period into four stages and investigate the changes by periods and regions. Last, we examine the periodical characteristics of bone implements, changing factors and properties in the Iron Age.
As a result, the relics where bone implements were excavated are shell mound adjacent to coast and rivers and they were sometimes excavated from the wetlands and ancient tombs. The location of relics has been formed mostly in independent hills isolated from the surroundings.
80% of materials used in bone implements come from the deer. An antler accounts for 50%, which is the highest. It is thought that the materials are supplied through hunting and gathering and they are used in various tools because they are strong and not easily broken. Bone implements are classified into practical implements and impractical implements depending on their functions. Practical implements include tools used in various fields such as handle of hand knife and carved antler, hunting implements such as bone arrowhead, fishing tools such as fishing, harpoon, spear and pricker, accessories such as hair-pin and hair ornament, and courtesy implements closely related to a mental life such as oracle bone.
We classify the period into 4 stages with targets of relics and examine the changing patterns of each tool by periods and regions. In the first stage (I), bone implements are found mainly in the Sacheonman region and fishing implements are mostly concentrated. In addition, new tools such as handles of hand knife and oracle bones are found. In the second stage (II), bone implements are found only in the Sacheonman region and Nakdong River downstream region. Hunting implements are diversified and fishing tools tend to decline. When it enters the third stage (III), bone implements are evenly distributed in the Youngnam region. In this stage, bone implements are more diversified and they are used and manufactured much more than those in other stages. In the fourth stage (IV), kinds of bone implements have been maintained since the previous stage (III). In particular, as it is found that bone implements are buried in tombs such as Yeanri and Daesung-dong tombs, it is thought that they are being kept as practical implements and burial accessories.
Taken all findings together, bone implements are changed and developed in the Iron Age in the Youngnam region through introduction of Iron Age culture and exchanges with surrounding regions. Fishing tools are rapidly made of iron through dissemination and diffusion of the Iron Age culture. It is thought that some tools that can be utilized in various fields such as handles of hand knife are expanded and distributed to the Youngnam region.
