This study was conducted for a general discussion of four‐county (四郡) landscape travelogues (山水遊記) written in the Joseon Dynasty. The four counties refer to Cheongpung (淸風), Danyang (丹陽), Jecheon (堤川), and Yeongchun (永春). The beautiful scenery of these places were famous throughout the Joseon Dynasty, and particularly from the 18th century, a large number of people traveled the areas and wrote many poems and essays. Nevertheless, the entire picture of four‐county excursions and landscape travelogues has not been grasped fully. Thus, this study reconstructed four‐county excursions and landscape travelogues in the Joseon Dynasty diachronically, then analyzed how those who traveled the four counties in those days perceived the spaces, and lastly, explored the meanings of four‐county excursions and landscape travelogues in the cultural history of the late Joseon Dynasty when the popularity of four‐county excursion reached its peak.

Four‐county excursion is largely divided into four periods. The 1st period is from the 16th century to the mid 17th century. Major scenes of Danyang including Gudam (龜潭) became known widely by Lee Hwang (李滉), and this activated four‐county excursions. In this period, landscape travelogues were written in order to introduce the scenery and therefore they played the role of a guidebook. The 2nd period is from the late 17th century to the early 18th century. As the four‐county excursion by Kim Chang‐hyeop‐Kim Chang‐heup (金昌協‐金昌翕) brothers presented a model to literati in those days, the number of four‐county travelers increased sharply afterwards. In this period, diary‐style (日記體) landscape travelogues were common, and landscape evaluation (山水品評) was in fashion. The 3rd period is from the mid 18th century to the late 18th century. During this period, the number of travelers increased explosively, and landscape travelogues were rich in quantity as well as in quality. In the mid 18th century, Lee Yun‐yeong (李胤永) retired to Danyang and left his marks at Gudam (龜潭) and Sainam (舍人巖), and these traces were mentioned continuously by subsequent travelers. Landscape travelogues in this period are characterized by lyric literary sketch style (小品體), construction by combination, and realistic descriptions. The 4th period is the 19th century. Landscape travelogues in this period do not have any particular characteristic. They used the description methods of geography (地理誌) for carrying human‐oriented geographic information, and showed the tendency of quoting existing texts.

Travelers in the Joseon Dynasty perceived the spaces of the four counties as follows. First, to them, these areas were as beautiful as Mt. Geumgang, and were places that could be traveled by boat and had fantastic scenes. Major attractions were situated by the river, and people usually excursed by boat. These spatial perceptions are represented by the verse popular in the late Joseon Dynasty “No river like this in Mt. Geumgang, and no mountain like this in the Han River.” These perceptions of the four counties provided a motive for four‐county excursion. Second, the four counties (四郡) were described as an immortal world (仙界). The government offices at the center of the four counties were regarded as an immortal world, and the governors of the counties considered themselves officials of immortal world. In this sense, the immortal image of the four counties is distinguished from that of other areas. Moreover, the image of immortal world was projected on most of major scenes in the four counties, and in the 18th century, some people like Lee Yun‐yeong retired to Danyang and had external alchemy training (外丹 修鍊) of Taoism. These footsteps reinforced further the image of immortal world, therefore some travelers perceived four‐county excursions to travel immortal world. Third, the four counties had a strong image of refuge. Many landscape travelogues expressed the desire to retire to the four counties, and not a few of them mentioned people who had actually retired to the places. The perception of these places as a refuge is attributed to their rough topography and beautiful scenery. They were regarded as a refuge from the world for escaping from political turmoil or as a refuge from disasters such as wars. The image as the two types of refuge is compatible with the perception of the four counties recorded, respectively, in Taekliji (擇里志) and Jeonggamrok (鄭鑑錄).

Four‐county landscape travelogues and excursion are related to the cultural and historical trends of the late Joseon Dynasty in two aspects. First, they are related to true‐view landscape culture The Nongyeon (農淵) Group preferred the scenery of these places, and they traveled the areas and left a large number of poems and essays. In fine arts as well, Jeong Seon (鄭敾) created landscape paintings describing the scenes, and many painters followed him. The scenery of the four counties provided important materials for artistic creation in true‐view landscape culture. Second, they are related to river‐based sightseeing (勝景觀) and geographic perception (地理 認識). During the reign of King Sukjoing, the outstanding scenery of Yeongwol (寧越) was recognized and valued, and some people argued that Jecheon should be removed from the four counties and replaced by Yeongwol. This was a consequence of reinforced emphasis on riverside scenes. With this perception, many paintings depicting the scenes of river were created in the same period. This is also compatible with the geographic perception of territory attaching importance to rivers.
