This study aimed to provide basic data for developing programs for smartphone addiction prevention applicable not only to individuals but also to families or communities and exploring nursing intervention methods by investigating the dependence of male and female middle school students on smartphones and comparing the effect of the personal factors (stress, self-control, depression, motivation to use smartphones), family factors (parent-adolescent communication, parental control over the use of smartphones), and school factors (school life adjustment, teacher control over the use of smartphones) on their smartphone addiction.
The design of this study was a cross-sectional and descriptive comparative study, and the data were collected from August 21 to September 14, 2014. A total of 390 students (male 198, female 192) who understood the purpose of this study and agreed to participate in this study among students attending five middle schools located in Seoul were examined using self-report questionnaires. The collected data were analyzed with real numbers and percentages, means, standard deviations, t-test, chi-square test, ANOVA, Scheffe, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and multiple regression analysis using SPSS 20.0.
The results of this study are as follows:

    1. In the general and smartphone usage characteristics of the male and female middle
school students, their school years, parents’ marital status, household economic status,
school grades, and smartphone addiction did not show significant differences by gender.
However, the mean daily hours of smartphone use (p<.001), main functions in use
(p<.001), and frequency of access to pornography (p<.001) showed significant differences
    by gender.

    2. Based on a comparison of the dependence on smartphones according to their general and smartphone usage characteristics, the male students’ school grades (F=5.40, p=.005), hours of smartphone use (F=15.20, p<.001), and main functions in use (F=4.78, p=.009) showed significant differences in smartphone addiction, and the female students’ showed significant differences in smartphone addiction according to hours of smartphone use (F=14.81, p<.001) and frequency of access to pornography (F=-2.10, p<.05).

    3. Based on a comparison of the degree of smartphone addiction, personal factors, family factors, and school factors of the male and female middle school students, stress of the personal factors showed that the male students were more stressed than the female students and statistically significant differences (t=5.82, p<.001). In addition, the male students were more controlled than the female students in the parental control over the use of smartphones of the family factors and there were statistically significant differences (t=1.96, p=.049). Moreover, the motivation to use smartphones showed that the female students used smartphones more frequently than the male students because of constant use of information (t=-3.87, p<.001) and convenience of use (t=-4.66, p<.001) and statistically significant differences.

    4. Based on a comparison of the correlation between personal factors, family factors,
and school factors, and smartphone addiction of the male and female middle school
students, With regard to the male students, psychological factors (stress, depression,
self-control) and motivation to use smartphones (convenience of use, ostentation and
fashion) of the personal factors, family factors (parent-adolescent communication), and
school factors (school life adjustment, teacher control over the use of smartphones)
showed a significant correlation with smartphone addiction. However, regarding the
female students, psychological factors (stress, depression, self-control) and motivation to
use smartphones (ostentation and fashion) of the personal factors, family factors
(parent-adolescent communication, parental control over the use of smartphones), and
school factors (school life adjustment) showed a significant correlation with smartphone addiction.

    5. This study analyzed the effect of personal, family, and school factors of the male
and female middle school students on smartphone addiction. According to the results,
with regard to the male students, stress of the personal factors (β=.40, p<.001),
ostentation and fashion of the motivation to use smartphones (β=.23, p<.001),
    depression (β=.18, p=.011), self-control (β=-.15, p=.019), and teacher control over the
use of smartphones (β=-.12, p=.019) had a great effect on smartphone addiction, in that
order. Conversely, regarding the female students, stress of the personal factors (β=.51,
p<.001) and ostentation and fashion of the motivation to use smartphones (β=.17,
p=.003) had a significant effect on smartphone addiction, in that order.

As described above, there was no significant difference in the level of smartphone
addiction between the male and female students, but it is found necessary to actively
intervene to prevent smartphone addiction because recently there is an increased risk of
smartphone addiction with increasing number of smartphone users. The factors affecting
smartphone addiction of the male and female middle school students varied by gender.
The factors affecting the male students’ smartphone addiction were stress, ostentation
and fashion, self-control, depression, and teacher control over the use of smartphones, in
that order, and the factors affecting the female students’ smartphone addiction were
stress and ostentation and fashion. The result that smartphone addiction varied by
gender suggests that it is necessary to consider gender characteristics in order to
develop effective management programs of smartphone addiction. This study encourages
further studies on smartphone addiction by gender and hopes that they will provide
basic data for developing nursing intervention for addiction management of middle school
    students.
