A Study on the Processes of Importing and Indigenizing the Korean Wave in Taiwan
The purpose of this thesis is to analyze the processes of importing and indigenizing the Korean Wave, a.k.a. Hallyu in Taiwan. The Korean Wave in Taiwan started from the early 1990's and still stands as a popular culture, fashion, food in many other areas. Fans in Taiwan not only have deep affection for the Korean Wave on everyday life but also created new methods of enjoying the Korean Wave. The Korean Wave in Taiwan is being naturalized and still affecting Greater China Region such as China and Hong Kong. However, the Korean Wave is often suspected as another cultural imperialism. Meanwhile, the popular culture of Taiwan became the hybrid culture and Koreanization, and strength of cultural influence let Hallyu become the indigenization of local culture. The purpose of this study is to explore the Korean Wave with focus on its indigenization through consumption, circulation and production in Taiwan. Ultimately, this study attempts to contribute to expanding understanding of the current state of the Korean Wave as well as popular culture in Taiwan.
