A study of variables related to the life satisfaction of baby boomer generation and echo boomer generation
The purpose of this study is to examine the characteristics and variables influencing the life satisfaction of parents belonging to the “baby boomer” generation and their children, often referred to as the echo “boomer” generation. This study seeks to understand the lives of the “baby boomer” generation and “echo boomer” generation on an individual level, which can in turn propose effective social policies, thus enhancing the life satisfaction of the “baby boomer” and “echo boomer” generation.
To achieve the purpose of this study, predictors of life satisfaction - demographic, economic, psychoemotional and social variables were selected based on existing literature to examine the characteristics of the “baby boomer” generation and “echo boomer” generation. Next, a comparison will be made between both generations with respect to the relative influence of each predicting variables on their respective life satisfaction and finally, based on the results, similarities and differences between both generations will be analyzed. This study utilized an eight-year record of data from the Korean Welfare Panel and 1947 participants from the “baby boomer” generation, and 2042 participants from the “echo boomer” generation were selected from the database. Data analysis was conducted using the SPSS Win 19.0 and frequency distribution, t-test, Chi-square test, One-way ANOVA, regression analysis and etc. were administered.
The results were as follows.
First, results from the comparison of mean level of life satisfaction between the “baby boomer” generation and “echo boomer” generation showed that the mean level of life satisfaction of the “echo boomer” generation was statistically significantly higher than that of the “baby boomer” generation. Based on a 5-point Likert scale, 3 was considered to be the average level of life satisfaction and both generations reported higher than average level of life satisfaction.
Second, the relative contribution of each predictor variable to life satisfaction between the “baby boomer” generation and “echo boomer” generation was compared. Statistically significant results were reported on all demographic, economic, psychoemotional and social variables. In terms of demographic variables, statistically significant differences in life satisfaction were reported on levels of education, marriage status, and perceived health status. More specifically, participants from both generations who have a higher level of education and income, married, and self-perceived to be healthy reported higher levels of life satisfaction.
Third, in the economic aspect, statistically significant differences in life satisfaction were reported on the type of job, total income, type of residence, and type of housing tenure. More specifically, participants from both generations who have a job, higher total income and possess home ownership of an apartment reported higher levels of life satisfaction.
Fourth, in the psychoemotional aspect, statistically significant differences in life satisfaction were reported on depression and self-esteem. More specifically, participants from both generations who have lower levels of depression and higher levels of self-esteem reported higher levels of life satisfaction.
Fifth, in the social aspect, statistically significant differences in life satisfaction were reported based on leisure expenditure, voluntary activities, and family conflicts. More specifically, irrespective of the parent or child’s generation, participants who engage in leisure activities, volunteer and experience little or no family conflicts reported higher levels of life satisfaction.
Sixth, comparing the influence of the predictor variables on the life satisfaction of participants from both generations, predictor variables – gender, marriage status, perceived health status, total income, liabilities, type of housing tenure, depression, self-esteem, voluntary activities, family conflicts and etc. demonstrated statistically significant influence on the level of life satisfaction of participants from the “baby boomer” generation. More specifically, groups in which participants are female and married, have higher income, possess housing ownership, higher levels of self esteem and participate in voluntary activities indicated higher levels of life satisfaction. In addition, participants who perceived their health status to be poor, have debts, higher level of depression, and presence of family conflicts reported lower level of life satisfaction. The life satisfaction of the “baby boomer” generation differs from that of the “echo boomer” with respect to the following variables – gender, marriage status, debts and voluntary activities.
Seventh, the predictor variables – level of education, cohabitation, perceived health status demonstrated statistically significant influence on the level of life satisfaction of participants from the “echo boomer” generation. More specifically, groups in which participants have higher levels of education, a job, higher income, possess home ownership, and higher self-esteem demonstrated higher levels of life satisfaction. On the reverse, groups in which participants do not live with their families, perceived their health status to be poor, have higher levels of depression and experience family conflicts demonstrated lower levels of life satisfaction.
In conclusion, the above results showed that employment, level of education, cohabitation contribute differently to the life satisfaction of the “echo boomer” generation as compared to the “baby boomer” generation. In addition, the association between perceived health status, high income, and house ownership with higher levels of life satisfaction for both generations was noteworthy. Hence, to enhance the life satisfaction of both generations, it is suggested that social systems in relation to minimizing family conflicts, maintaining or improving one’s health, and engaging in economic activities that secure one’s income should be established to promote an enriching life for parents and their children who are from different generations.
