In the history of Korean poetry, Baekseok has been evaluated as a representative poet at the end of 1930s'. Since poem and translated poem created and announced in North Korea were additionally found, the study on Baekseok entered new transitional period. Such change in the configuration of study is expected to contribute to the expansion of breadth of Baekseok literature. This dissertation intends to clarify the continuity of Baekseok poem by noting his poems created before separation and the characteristics of literary style of created poem and translated poem while he was in North Korea.
The characteristics of literary style of poem text should be clarified for all speech flows over sentence, namely, for discourse. Keeping this issue in mind, this dissertation tried to review the characteristic ending of word and expression of grammatical person, conjugation shown in the poem of Baekseok and to clarify their complex relation. The concept of discourse is useful in explaining Baekseok as a translator who pursues creative translation rather than literary translation.
By using diverse connective endings of word in the poem 『Deer』, Baekseok instilled the depth of peculiar rhythm and time and the emotion of discourse entity in the work. The repetition technique and connected sentence employed by Baekseok enhances colloquial speech flow and story and successfully reveals the view of the world of poem 『Deer』 which pursues reconciliation and co-existence. By calling poetic object in 『Deer』 with diverse nouns unlike general lyric poems, Baekseok makes the existences appearing in the text individual and unique.
The conjugation that did not appear in the past frequently appears in the poem after 『Deer』. The utilization of conjugation contributes the control the distance from poetic object with diversified expression of grammatical person. Unlike 『Deer』 where poetic object was frequently called proper noun, the discourse entity was designated in the pronoun of the 2nd person such as 'You' in the poems after 『Deer』. This is connected to diverse relation with the object and realizes speculation about me and indicative speech flow.
When Baekseok was in North Korea, conjugation, connective ending of word and expression of grammatical person like 'I' or 'we' also appeared. However, such expressions showed functional change, because the expression of poem of Baekseok announced in North Korea frequently enhanced the diagram of poem. The porpre noun and common noun which enhanced the individuality of existence are also transformed into word that refers to the public. Notwithstanding, the pity for object which was shown in the former poem of Baekseok could be found in the dependent noun 'thing' or some connective ending of word.
Utilizing the archaic ending of word, the translated poem of Baekseok reminds us of the viewpoint of Kim Eok on the ending of word of poem. Although the archaic ending of word can be read as retrogression, it leaves the room for consideration in that it contributes to the rhythm of poem and shows diverse variations. Modifier and the creative shape of translation of grammatical person makes us remember the property of creative poem and feel the translation of Baekseok natural. The translated poem of Baekseok shows sense and agony of translator such as arbitrary rearrangement of lines in the original poem or adjustment of composition of sentence. As he did in creative poem, he general considered relation of several factors of sentence, diverse phrases and even discourse of poem.
As a poet and translator, Baekseok was a literary man who vehemently pondered over discourse of poem and sincerely strove for new quest of phrase of Korean language. Baekseok was an artist in that he was more sensitive to form than anyone else and was a distinguished translator in that he left individual results of translation against the difficulty of translation. The poetic world and literary world of Baekseok will be grasped more completely if including the diverse transformation after the end of 1930s'.
