The purpose of this study is to find out problems when STEAM education applies to kindergartens in future and then to provide the basic data to develop STEAM education for young children by examining kindergarten teacher's perception and needs for STEAM education.
The research questions set up for the purpose of this study are as follows.
First, how about the perception and actual condition of kindergarten teachers for STEAM education?
Second, what about the needs of kindergarten teachers for STEAM education?
The subjects of this study are the kindergarten teachers in Busan. The questionnaires were distributed to the total number of 250 teachers in 17 institutions and the 244 questionnaires of them were returned and then the 243 questionnaires were analyzed except one of them filled out insincerely.
The collected data of this study was analyzed by using SPSS 19.0 program. The frequency and percentage were also calculated for examining the general characteristics of teachers and the descriptive statistics analyze was conducted for looking at awareness and demand of kindergarten teachers about STEAM education.
As a result of searching for the perception and actual conditions of kindergarten teachers for STEAM education, it appears that they have a poor understanding and a lack of experience but there are many responses of that it needs STEAM education about the question of the perception that is it necessary for STEAM education. It needs to provide an opportunity to experience STEAM education for kindergarten teachers to have continuous interest and recognize the necessity of STEAM education. In addition, this study shows that kindergarten teachers demand development and supply of STEAM education program, teacher's comprehension of STEAM education, supply of various teaching and learning materials, teacher training, improvement in curriculum and so on for activating STEAM education
