This study was to examine total contents of Polyphenol and Flavonoid, composition and content of Phenolic Acid and Flavonoid, and antioxidant activity by DPPH with hot water and methanol extracts from flower, flower stalk and stem of Celosia cristata and artificial hair dyeing with flower pigment. The results were as follows:
1. Total Polyphenol content for hot water extract was 385.67 ± 0.76 mg% of flower, 248.33 ± 0.35 mg% of flower stalk, and 93.67 ± 0.24 mg% of stem. And methanol extract was 405.33 ± 0.53 mg% of flower, 224.35 ± 0.77 mg% of flower stalk, and 85.00 ± 0.82 mg% of stem.
2. Total Flavonoid content for hot water extract was 194.50 ± 0.36 mg% of flower which had the highest, 109.30 ± 0.52 mg% of flower stalk, and 19.55 ± 0.23 mg% of stem. And methanol extract was 195.70 ± 0.77 mg% of flower, 115.50 ± 0.87 mg% of flower stalk, and 20.90 ± 0.15 mg% of stem; extract of hot water and methanol are almost same.
3. From hot water and methanol extract for flower, flower stalk and stem of Celosia cristata, we confirm there are 10 types of Phenolic Acids: Protocatechuic Acid, Chlorogenic Acid, 4-Hydroxybenzonic Acid, Caffeic Acid, Isovanillic Acid, p-Coumaric Acid, Ferulic Acid, t-Coumaric Acid, Rosmarinic Acid, and t-Cinnamic Acid, and 4 types of Flavonoid: Rutin, Taxifolin, Quecertin, and Kaempferol, respectively.
4. DPPH radical scavenging activity for hot water extract was 64.85 ± 0.37% of flower which had the highest, 54.69 ± 0.42% of flower stalk, and 8.41 ± 0.22% of stem. And methanol extract was 71.51 ± 0.35% of flower, 36.84 ± 0.51% of flower stalk, and 9.50 ± 0.28% of stem.
5. Dyeing of artificial hair with extracted flower pigment from Celosia cristata was failed when hair did not mordant. In pre-mordanted case, hair color with simultaneous mordant dyeing was light purple visually, and at 40℃, effect of dyeing hair in 30minutes(3% mordanted) was high and dyeing in 60minutes with 2% and 3% of mordant was the highest. And simultaneous mordant in 30minutes and 60minutes at 50℃ was found to very good at 3% of mordant.
6. In fastness of shampoo, dyeing hair in 30minutes and 60minutes at 50℃ are more stable than dyeing in 30minutes and 60minutes at 40℃.
7. In fastness of daylight, dyeing hair in 30minutes and 60minutes at 50℃ are more stable than dyeing in 30minutes and 60minutes at 40℃.
From these results, antioxidant activity of hot water and methanol extracts from flower of Celosia cristata was satisfactory; it maybe useful in the materials of natural antioxidant. But additional connected research between enzyme activity within a cell and interrelation with cosmetics is demanded to use it as cosmetic material.
Also, since flower pigment of Celosia cristata is water soluble, effect of dyeing hair was low. But we anticipate good result if research about mordant or dyeing method continues.
