The purpose of the study is to convert many existing teaching materials into smart learning contents to reuse according to needs of learners. And, in order to supplement the classroom environment for speaking education in face-to-face teaching situations, smart learning will be applied and mobile application implemented to improve speaking skills of learners.
The ultimate goal of learners who study who study a second language is to be able to communicate in that language without difficulty. To achieve such goal, there are many textbooks available in the market, and many books on Korean languate education have been published as well.
Despite development of various textbooks and information technology, Korean language education did not fully use such environment. This problem seems to arise due to the following reasons :
First, despite increasing diversity of Korean language textbooks and teaching materials, to improve speaking skills, teachers are still complaining about lack of materials due to insufficient exchange and only try to develop new text books without using existing ones. Second, applications that are available in the market currently are focused on English, and there are not many Korean learning applications that are available at the monet. For that reason, in this study, and application for learning Korean speaking skills was proposed. This can help improve learners' speaking skills by applying a way to improving face-to-face classroom environment.
Previous research on smart learning was reviewed to examine the concept and characteristics of smart learning, communication-oriented teaching method, and reusability of existing Korean speaking textbooks to smart learning and improving face-to-face classroom environment.
Previous research on smart learning was reviewed to examine the concept and characteristics of smart learning, communication-oriented teaching method, and reusability of textbooks. Also, to implement an application for learning Korean speaking skills, types and market status of applications was analyzed and Korean learning applications were analyzed based on the result. First, applications for Korean language education were set as a supplementary textbook or tool before analyzing them according to learning goal, content and evaluation level. Based on the result, analysis and design of Korean language applications was performed and educational efficiency was reviewed based of the examples of Korean speaking applications to improve communication skills.
This study led to the following results: First, smart learning for Korean speaking skills was proposed. the worldwide change with smart devices and IT development has also influenced Korean language education, and various tools can be used for learning languages. Second, the study focused on converting existing teaching materials into a smart learning content, by excluding the work and inefficiency involved with developing a new material for the application. Third, the application used input and output activities that did not exist in paper textbooks to enable vice recognition and role-play function. By using this function, learners can learn speaking skills on their own to improve communication skills.
The following will need to be improved in the future: First, the example used in this study was only based on a part of 'Seogang Korean', and continuous research and development will be needed to support reusing various textbooks. Second, technological aspects need to be incorporated to use the textbooks in more diverse ways and develop content types, As applications based on augmented or virtual reality are available, it is urgent to develop a way to improve learning efficiency. Third, the study did not test feasibility of the application with actual learners.
Further research will need to supplement these limitations to develop relevant applications.
