This study was executed to identify how actual Korean counselors judged reasons of premature termination. That termination reasons could be differently judged according to the cases of their own cases and other people's cases about premature termination which occurs in counseling procedures. Regarding suggested premature termination scenarios, the case was defined as lf self-serving bias occurred in the cases that counselors blame client more in their own cases and blame counselor more in other people's cases. Additionally, evaluations about premature termination reasons were identified according to regulatory focus types (promotion focus people, prevention focus people) by adding regulatory focus variables which could affect the self-serving bias.
Data collection for this study was executed targeting 118 subjects who have longer than 1 year counseling experience until 2014. Counselors were allocated only one scenario in two scenarios according to case type conditions (their own case, other people's case), and after reading the relevant scenario, they were asked to answer the questions in premature termination reason attribution survey which is made by the author. Finally, regulatory focus types were measured.
Data were analyzed through mixed design ANOVA with the rated scores of the data which are composed of three factors 3 way split-plot design of case type(2 : their own case, other people's case) x regulatory focus type(2 : promotion focus people, prevention focus people) x premature termination reason attribution(2 : blame counselor, blame client) in premature termination reason attribution items as dependent variable. Case types and regulatory focus types were between subjects, and premature termination reason attribution was an within subjects.
Study results are as follows. First, counselors' evaluations were identified about premature termination reasons according to case types (their own case, other people's case). In their own cases, counselors rated higher scores in the case of blame client more than counselor.
Second, counselors' evaluations about premature termination reasons according to case types (their own case, other people's case) were identified to vary according to regulatory focus type(promotion focus people, prevention focus people). Cases of promotion focus people showed significant tendency to rate higher scores in the case to blame client, not counselor in their own cases. On the other hand, prevention focus people didn't showed any significant difference in the rated scores of each premature termination reason items according to their own case and other people's cases.
Therefore, self-serving bias appeared also in Korean counselors that blame client, not counselor in their own cases when evaluating premature termination reasons.
In this study, self-serving bias was identified to appear also in Korean counselor when evaluating premature termination by making actual counselor evaluate premature termination reasons by suggesting the scenarios. And this study has a meaning in that individual characteristic variable of the counselor like regulatory focus could affect the premature termination evaluation.
