As a research on Changeological image and the Change-Penetrating Principle in Feng-shui geography, this study focused on sustainability of reality of Yin-Yang Sha-shui (local features of the bodies of mountains and water).
Generally, it is said that Feng-shui geography is the science of human life and dwelling sites, which is closely related to the matter how human beings lead their life and how long they can sustain. In the context, Feng-shui shows a close correlation with sustainable development in the contemporary meaning.
The operation of Feng-shui depends on the process that energy called Qi flows, that is, the relationship between circulation and convergence. When Qi circulates and not gathered, it scatters. That is, Qi scatters when it circulates only without being retained, while it is extinct when it is retained only, not circulating, which is the Yin-Yang theory. It is also called ups-downs, Shan-shui (mountain-water image), and Feng-shui. In the operation of Feng-shui, the field and site for Qi flow is very important because of the geographical features. The characteristic of Feng-shui is to predict and judge good or ill lucks or ups and downs at the site where Qi flows.
This placeness of Feng-shui has a logical structure of Sha-shui by the medium of bearings of the Eight Trigrams for divination (called Bague). From the bearings of Bague, Sha-shui develops to the process Qi circulates or convenes grounded on Yin-Yang. In that respect, the origin of Feng-shui is based on the logic of Sha-shui which has a pattern of Yin and Yang. Yin-Yang refers to the energy of two types of Qi which conflict each other or co-exist. The phenomenon of Qi is realized through Sha-shui. Feng-Shui experts or geomancers predict and judge the change of Yin and Yang by the logic of Sha-shui at spatial sites.
This principle can be explained by Changeological thinking, that is, the Change-Penetrating Principle, The existence of all things and every creation has the property of the strong and the gentle, which is the essence for formation and change. Every existence continuously changes without being stagnant, and such changes imply sustainability or constancy of the space-time itself. Complex correlation of cooperation and tense between Yin and Yang or the virile and the gentle shows a section of continuous relationship of formation and change of all things and every creation.
Such organic networking can be explained by the concept of the Change-Penetrating Principle in『Yeokjeon』. The Change-Penetrating Principle describes correlation between the object and the subject. The Change and Penetrating would be distinguished and changed each other, which can be explained in the phrase, “Penetrated by changing and changed by penetrating”. The phrase, “Penetrated by changing“ can be understood as the operational way of the objective world, while the phrase, ”Changed by penetrating“ can be done as the operational way of human society.
Applying the view of Change and Penetration to the principle of Feng-Shui, Sha-shui, a dwelling site can be stably secured and meet sustainable development when Yin-Yang Sha-shui and its flow and convergence is appropriately placed for leading life in the space of a site. Thus, Feng-Shui geography is to be the science of human life and its site.
