This study aims to advance research on young children’s creative leadership and to offer the practical implications of the development of creative leadership improvement programs in early childhood education. From theoretical evidences of previous research, children’s creative disposition, interpersonal relationship formative competence, and empathic ability were considered as main factors affecting their creative leadership for this study.
To this end, the study was guided by the following two questions.
First, what influence do young children’s creative disposition, interpersonal relationship formative competence, and empathic ability have on their creative leadership?
Second, what structural relationships exist between young children’s creative disposition, interpersonal relationship formative competence, and empathic ability which impact their creative leadership?
This study was conducted at early childhood centers in Gangwon-do Province, with 4 and 5-year-old children, by measuring creative leadership, creative disposition, interpersonal relationship formative competence, and empathic ability. 541 responses were considered for the analysis after removing false responses and non-responses from the data. Correlation analysis, multiple regression analysis, and structural equation modeling were performed for the data analysis.
The major findings of the study were as follows:
First, correlation analysis was carried out to examine the relationships among children’s creative leadership, creative disposition, interpersonal relationship formative competence, and empathic ability. Creative leadership and creative disposition had the highest static correlation. Creative leadership, interpersonal relationship formative competence, and empathic ability were still found to have statistic relevance.
Multiple regression analysis was also performed to measure what influence children’s creative disposition, interpersonal relationship formative competence, and empathic ability had on their creative leadership. Children’s creative disposition was found to be the most significant factor in shaping their creative leadership. The inclusion of the interpersonal relationship formative competence showed an increase in influence on creative leadership. Further inclusion of empathic ability showed a total 71% influence on creative leadership. The regression model for empathic ability was found significant at p<0.001, which confirms the suitability of the model. These results show that children’s creative disposition had a critical impact on their creative leadership, followed by their interpersonal relationship formative competence and then their empathic ability.
Second, structural equation model validation was performed to see if the study model is consistent with the collected data. The results of the structural equation modeling showed that children’s creative disposition had a direct influence on their creative leadership. Next, it was shown that children’s interpersonal relationship formative competence also had a direct influence on their creative leadership. Furthermore, children’s interpersonal relationship formative competence was found to have a direct influence on their creative disposition and thus have an indirect impact on their creative leadership. Thus, children’s interpersonal relationship formative competence directly influences on their creative leadership with their creative disposition acting as the intermediary factor.
Furthermore, children’s empathic ability was found to directly influence their interpersonal relationship formative competence, and thus indirectly affect their creative disposition. In addition, children’s empathic ability was found to affect their creative leadership indirectly through their interpersonal relationship formative competence. It indicates that children’s interpersonal relationship formative competence has an absolutely intermediary role between their empathic ability and creative leadership.
