The purpose of this study is to help effective settlement of school counseling by identifying how students perceived the counseling in Jeonju-located elementary schools with a professional counselor.
To achieve the purpose of this study, “the necessity and awareness about school counseling", “the past experience on school counselling and the degree of its helpfulness" and “students' expectation for the improvement direction of school counseling" were set as the main questions of this study. 410 students among 5 grades and 6 grades students in three elementary schools located in Jeonju were surveyed on December, 2013 and then the valid 387 respondents were finally selected for this study.
The results of analysis for the main questions are as in the following.
Firstly, it was shown that both male and female students recognized the necessity of school counselling and that school counselling was helpful among students. And it was also shown that students tended to have lots of worries on the whole. Specifically the course-related matter was the most frequently answered worry for the students, which was followed by studying problem and individual problem.
Secondly, it was shown that over half of students got a school counseling in the past and students preferred a school counseling teacher as their counselor. And with respect to the route for students to get a counseling, it appeared that most students spontaneously went for counseling and felt school counseling was helpful. Among students who haven't gotten a school counselling, however, it was shown that “no expectation for the effect of a school counselling" was the most frequent response for the reason.
Thirdly, the result of the analysis for the improvement direction of school counseling showed that the individual counselling was answered as the most preferred type of school counselling. As to the type of counselor. a kind, mild and cooperative counselor was most preferred. The result also showed that “whenever it is needed" is the most frequently answered in terms of the proper time of counselling and the expected role of counselor is to listen to and understand one's problems. And with regard to the most proper time for the individual counselling and the group counselling, the most preferred time was once a semester. Finally it is shown that most students expect that the school counselling will be helpful from now on and want counselor or counseling teacher to be placed at school.
Following suggestions are proposed for the efficient and proper settlement based on the result presented above.
Firstly, a professional counselor or a counseling teacher should be deployed at school for the efficient and proper settlement of school counselling.
Secondly, a variety of public relations for the necessity of counselling have to be actively made for many students to participate in school counseling.
Thirdly, the lack of counselor should be dealt with through professional counselor systems and administrative, financial assistance.
Finally, in the case of professional counselors' placement, their professionalism should be guaranteed and their sense of belonging should be strengthened for the participation in overall school works and discussion.
