Accurate pronunciation is a foundation of understanding the characteristics of a vocal sound and the phonetics, improving communication skill, and demonstrating fluency of the language to the learner who learns Korean as a foreign language.
Korean has phonetic symbols. It shows how important pronunciation is in teaching Korean. According to the rules of Korean spelling clause 1, ‘Write as the sound, according to the grammar’ shows that Korean is not only based on an alphabetical orthography but also includes morphology. This means that every word cannot be written by pronunciation. This research aims at the possibility of raising supremacy of language acquisition by using the computer as an assistance tool in learning the Korean language. Therefore, this thesis focuses on developing web-based learning program as a method of reaching an effective Korean pronunciation education. It seems that this kind of Korean learning program development can be very helpful for foreigners to learn Korean speaking and writing. The research studies the purpose of ‘developing a Korean pronunciation learning program that is connected to writing’ based on the suggestions above.
Korean has words that could be written by their pronunciation. On the other hand, written words and pronunciations could also be different. Also, basic 14 consonants of final consonant and other double consonants should be pronounced with 7 consonants as ‘[ㄱㄴㄷㄹㅁㅂㅇ]’. This characteristic affects Korean learners who face the difficulties of learning the pronunciation of final double consonants and their writing. Accurate Korean pronunciation is related to writing education. Inaccurate pronunciation leads to errors in writing. This means writing education should be developed for more accurate pronunciation.
Therefore, for the people who learn Korean as a foreign language, the easiness of language acquisition should be secured by teaching writing and the related pronunciation at the same time. Pronunciation and writing education is essential in the way that leads to understanding the meaning of words and sentences and eventually enables smooth communication. As outlined above, Korean should be taught by limiting the writings of phonemes and letters which are connected to pronunciation at the basic level. This kind of education enables the understanding of words that are combined with consonants, their uses, and the characteristics of pronunciation. It is also helpful to write and pronounce accurately.
Pronunciation education is effective when repeating after the native speaker’s pronunciation or training accurate pronunciation by following the way of pronouncing the words. In order to do that one-on-one classes should be provided. Therefore, the learner will be able to speak the language with a very accurate pronunciation by listening and seeing the native instructor. But one-on-one class can not always happen in the field. Also native instructors have a limitation of the numbers of learners and it is impossible to teach according to their levels. In this kind of environment, developing a program that is possible to get over the time and space limitations can be lead to an accurate pronunciation for the Korean language learners.
Composing a Korean pronunciation program by using the CAI(Computer Assisted Instruction) can solve these problems. CAI has a characteristic that does not limit the time or place and allows infinite repetition. It also has the possibility to teach according to levels. It will be a great education tool to learn pronunciation, which needs listening to a native speaker’s pronunciation, and to become familiar with the way of pronunciation by observing the shape of the mouth.
The first chapter of this thesis describes the necessity and purpose of the study, the method and the subject of study, and a review of the advanced research.
The second chapter describes cognitivism learning theory, which is the basis of the program, and behaviorism and constructionism learning theory as supportive learning theories. The chapter describes the CAI computer assistance lesson technique.
The third chapter studies development composition of an actual pronunciation learning program, study on pronunciation learning program using CAI through learning progress flow chart.
Lastly, the fourth chapter is the conclusion of summing up the previous discussions, and has references to further studies.
