This study was to examine the relation between children's temperament, mother's parenting efficacy and children's emotion regulation and also to examine if mother's parenting efficacy played a mediating role in the relation between children's temperament and their emotion regulation. For this, this study collected research materials through questionnaire method targeting about 315 of children who attend a kindergarten or day care center at the age of from 3 to 5 and their mothers.
Children's emotion regulation was analyzed by the scale of kim, Ji Yun(2007) which translated Shield and Cicchetti(1997)' Emotion Regulation Checkist scale. Children's temperament was analyzed by using the scale of Seo, Joo Hyeon(2009) which reconstituted Revised Dimensions Of Temperament Survey scale. Mother's parenting efficacy was analyzed by using the scale of Kim, Min Jeong(2007) which revised and complemented Gibaud-Wallston and Wandersman(1978)'s Parenting Sence Of Competence scale.
In order to analyze data, the correlation coefficient was calculated between variables, and simple regression analysis and multiple regression analysis were carried out.
The results of the study can be summarized into the followings.
First, the more children's temperament was adaptive and regular, the higher children's adaptive emotion regulation appeared and the children's maladaptive emotion regulation was lower.
Second, the higher efficacy of sub factors of mother's parenting efficacy was, the higher the children's adaptive emotion regulation was and maladaptive emotion regulation was low. on the other hand, the higer mother's frustration and anxiety was, the lower adaptive emotion regulation was and maladaptive emotion regulation was high.
Third, as children's temperament was adaptive and regular, mother's efficacy was higher and the higher children's activity was, the lower mother's efficacy was. Also when children's temperament was adaptive and regular, mother's frustration and anxiety was low and the higher children's activity was, the higher mother's frustration and anxiety was.
Fourth, sub factor of mother's parenting efficacy - efficacy/frustration - acted as a complete mediation role at the relationship between children's regular temperament and their maladaptive emotion regulation. it played a partial role at the relationship between children's regular temperament and their adaptive emotion regulation.
This study found that children's temperament and mother's parenting efficacy had a major influence on children's emotion regulation and also by discovering a meditation role of mother's parenting efficacy at the relationship between children's temperament and their emotion regulation, mother's parenting efficacy was an important factor for predicting children's emotion regulation. The result of this study can be used to expand understanding of children's emotion regulation and as basic line data for Parental education programme's development which promotes children's emotional development.
