This study investigated the influence of flexible branding on the expansion of brand experience and value co-creation with customers. The advent of new media brings with it many sociocultural phenomenon. The evolution and expansion of media has resulted in the current multimedia era, and various sociocultural contents have been reborn into digital format. Technological advancement and the birth of new media has had a variety of effects on our everyday lives and even influenced human life, behavioral patterns, and thoughts as well. Thus, the current study’s significance is as follows.
Consumers nowadays share information with others through myriads of networks and achieve what is called collective intelligence. Rather than passively taking in information from companies, consumers now actively create and deliver information. By sharing and communicating with others, consumers not only have shown a change in consuming patterns, but also lead the shift in political, economical, societal, and cultural paradigms. Unlike the vast amount of information from previous consumers during the Web 1.0 era, companies no longer consider consumers to be a passive target in the Web 2.0 era. Based on this change, company branding activities must adapt new methods and go through innovative change. As branding has become a critical element in brand-consumer relationships, more research that investigates consumer experience to develop a novel concept of branding is required.
The change in consumer behavior induced by the advancement of technology and media environment, as well as the change in communication, means that companies must engage in a branding method different from before. This study defines this new method as “Flexible Branding” and states the necessity of research that aims to establish a definition, find strategical application, as well as future direction. The study’s goal was to objectively investigate the type and characteristics of flexible branding and the requirement and importance of flexible branding. Another goal was to present branding strategies and future direction to expand brand experience.
To carry out the aforementioned goals, we aimed to answer the following research questions. First, we studied the background and events that led to appearance of the concept of flexible branding. Second, we established the concept of flexible branding by literature study and previous studies. Third, through case studies, we investigated the different kinds and characteristics of flexible branding. Fourth, we presented strategies and future direction for flexible branding to expand brand experience. The results of this research questions are as follows.
In this paper, we pointed out the limitations of corporate-oriented branding activity and proposed a flexible branding concept for the expansion of brand experience and customer-cooperative value creation. We started off with determining a definite concept of flexible branding and investigating the relationship development based on the change in paradigm seen in each fields. Also, through various theoretical contemplation and case study analysis, we researched the validity, applicable value, and possibility of flexible analysis. The deducted theoretical definition of flexible identity and flexible branding is as follows.
Flexible identity is an identity that is capable of consistently maintaining an innate identity while being open to change through various visualization theories. Also, it responds to the media environment and consumers and it utilizes various design organizations and emotional approaches to offer brand experience. This is the concept of flexible branding this paper put forth to handle the unpredictable management environment. Thus, through the process of establishment and application of the identity, flexible identity can be defined as a concept of branding aiming to develop and expand the brand experience through cooperative value creation with consumers.
Along with the establishment of flexible branding’s concept, we deducted the following results through a case study analysis. Examples of flexible branding can be easily seen in fields such as art & culture, universities & laboratories, TV broadcast stations, Internet, and city/neighborhood communities. This revealed that flexible branding is developing in fields that require interaction among people. On the other hand, flexible branding was invisible in fields that emphasize tradition and trust, such as finance, luxury brands, and traditional manufacturers. It is believed that because these industry groups are less sensitive to media environment or customer attitude and strongly adhere to tradition; they put more significance in the name value of their brand rather than various customer attitude. Thus flexible branding should be strategically implemented based on the characteristics of the brand as well as that of the company.
The results of the type and characteristics of flexible branding from analyzing case studies are as follows. Flexible branding is composed of four types: visual system expansion, information and narrative, media interaction, and value co-creation. Also, the four characteristics of flexible branding are : expandability, integrity, adaptability, and openness.
The first characteristics is expandability. The expandability of flexible branding is possible because the flexibility of the object to stay static in one form but rather changes both visually and meaningfully to maintain a system that is continuous. This ultimately leads customers to expand their experience through the branding experience and thus enable a continuous brand experience. The second characteristics is integrity. Different fields of design create meaningful expansions and connections within and thus result in a higher sense of mutual help. These connections help expand the brand identity and thus develops integrity as mutual help increases. This feature not only helps adjust to the environment but also helps maintain a cohesiveness and thus achieve ultimate integrity. The third feature is the adaptability to media environment. Compared to the past, a company’s branding activity must be more flexible, reasonable, and connected. This is the result of a networked multimedia era where various mediums are more flexible than printed or video mediums in conveying and expressing oneself. Branding activity that relied on more stagnant methods can benefit from the ability of flexible branding to adapt to media environment and further expand the brand experience. The fourth characteristics is openness. This changed branding methods and processes. Specifically, while it stabilizes brand identity in a visual form, by planning to ensure that it can be representation in an unlimited number of forms, openness aims for value co-creation and made possible the expansion of brand experience.
In the past, companies have managed their brand based on brand consistency. In recent days, however, customer participation and experience has become an important factor. We predict that research on how to combine customer participation and utilizing experience with corporate branding activities as well as a more detailed approach will be in the spotlight for the future. Also, the role of a designer in brand establishment is not designing the result, but rather coming up with the process and rule from cooperative innovation. From this perspective, flexible identity establishment and branding activity allows a diverse understanding and consumer participation through which the brand actively evolves into a different form.
This paper focused on establishing the concept of flexible branding and its strategic application and deducted validity and applicable value through researching various theoretical backgrounds and case studies. The type of flexible branding seen in this study will create an sustainable brand an act as the methodological base with which the company can work with the consumers to co-create value and expand the brand experience. The significance of our study can be seen in the various discussions of flexible branding and the proposal of the concept and value. Future research should focus on the strategic application of flexible branding in other fields and should actively discuss the matter more.
