The purpose of this study is to find the effective way of career and vocational education for elementary school students with special needs. To achieve this purpose, we examined the fact for career and vocational education for special needs students in elementary school and teacher's perception difference by the type of schools.
The followings are major questions in this research.
First, the difference between special school and special class in terms of career and vocational education for special needs students in elementary school.
Second, the difference between special education teachers in elementary school and middle school in terms of their perception on career and vocational education for special needs students.
A survey was conducted on 196 special education teachers of elementary , middle and high schools in Young-Nam province(Busan, Ulsan, GyungSangNamdo). The questionnaire is composed of 3 categories and 43 questions. The survey data were studied by frequency analysis, cross correlation analysis, and t-student analysis.
Based on these analyses, the results are as follows.
First, there's difference between special schools and special classes in general elementary schools in terms of special student's career education's management, starting age, objectives, contents, resources, and the usage of local society resources. This result is caused by consequence of different curriculum, and its usage according to different type of school's policy.
Second, perception on career and vocational education for special needs students in elementary school is different between elementary school teachers and middle-high school teachers. Especially required degree, starting age, connectivity, continuous teaching necessity in this perception showed difference. It can be explained by elementary school teacher's anxiety about proper career education, and the fact of discontinuous education between elementary school to middle school. Therefore, to increase the connectivity of this education, there's great needs in co-developing integrated education plan and more communication medium for connecting elementary, middle and high school teachers.
Third, elementary school teachers insisted that they are having difficulty in managing career and vocational education, because professional knowledge, education time, and related materials are lacking. Therefore, they thought that they require proper career education program's development and supply, curriculum policy in the level of local Ministry of Education, building and managing related educational institution in local society, and the systematic teacher training program.
