Since divination is the fountainhead of Eastern philosophy including the Book of Changes, it is inevitable and necessary to study divination and fortunetelling for the Book of Changes. Approaching the essence of the Book of Changes is not possible without a profound study of the root and the origin of divination. In a broad sense, divination used to be the norm of behaviors as well as a role model of thoughts embracing the spirituality of Eastern people.
The Book of Changes is the most valuable classic that contains Confucian view of the world and life including metaphysics, epistemology, and the theory of value. Zhu Xi(1130-1200), considered to be the best scholar throughout the history of the Book of Changes, complied various teachings and synthesized three standpoints of the thoughts in the Book of Changes—the image and number principle (象數易), the moral and rational principle (義理易), and the divination principle(卜筮易)—into one integrated point of view.
There is no doubt that divination is an indispensable element in Zhu Xi’s study. However, it is not everything about his study in the Book of Changes. It should be covered with broader and more various spectra. As is generally known, the Original Meaning of the Book of the Changes(周易本義) was edited with priority given to divination, while Explanation of the Book of Changes(易學啓蒙) dealt with the issues of the structure and formation of the world laying stress on Hado(河圖) and Nakseo(洛書). The Analects of Zhu Xi(朱子語類) provided answers to the fundamental questions of the Book of Changes and suggested various viewpoints related to the image and number, the morality and rationality, as well as the divination through the dialogue with his disciples. Hence, it is required to investigate all these three texts comprehensively to clearly reveal the principle of Zhu Xi’s study in the Book of Changes.
The purpose of this dissertation is to study how Zhu Xi has synthesized the image and number theory with the morality and rationality theory based upon the divination theory. Majority of scholars have been trying to cover Zhu Xi’s study with the aspect of the moral and rational principle or that of the image and number principle from the Neo-Confucianism’s point of view. It is no exaggeration to say that this brought insufficient achievements of study in divination itself despite Zhu Xi had emphasized that divination was the very beginning and the essence of the Book of Changes.
Although greatly emphasized the importance of the divination with the image and number, Zhu Xi realized that the Book of Changes lacking the value of morality would be nothing but a petty artifice. Therefore, he adopted ethics. The ultimate purpose of the moral and rational principle is to bring the oneness of heaven and humanity. Since the divination without morality and rationality would be just a means of fortunetelling and the image and number principle without morality and rationality would be also a vacant idealism, it would be inevitable for both divination principle and the image and number principle to pursue the moral and rational principle. For that reason, Zhu Xi tried to strengthen rationality of the Book of Changes in accordance with the logic of the divination by adopting mathematical precision, and it successfully served as a stepping stone for the world full of morality. Furthermore, this let Zhu Xi aim the world of morality beyond the understanding the divination and enabled him to establish Neo-Confucianism from his standpoint of the Book of Changes. Finally, the key to approach the true quality of Zhu Xi’s the Book of the Changes would be to figure out the core part of his study which is to combine the morality and rationality with the image and number based upon the divination.
