The Effect and Implication of Using SNS on Student Interaction and Learning Outcomes
Despite the widespread use of Social Network Services(SNS) by student and its increased use by instructors, very little empirical evidence is available concerning the impact of SNS use on student interaction and outcomes. More specifically, no studies have examined the effect of using SNS as part of an educational intervention on student interaction.
The first purpose of this study describes our semester-long experimental study to determine if using SNS for educationally relevant purposes can impact college student learning outcomes(e. g., grade). And the second purpose is the reason for the difference in academic achievement will prove that.
So, this study consists of Step two. First step is experimental study. Two of the sections were assigned to the experimental group and the control group. With the experimental group, SNS was used for various types of academic and curricular discussions.
The ANOVA results showed that the experimental group had a significantly greater increase in learning outcomes than the control group. However, there was no difference score in the team-project. This study provides experimental evidence that SNS can be used and educational tool to help student learning outcomes.
The second step is to utilize the empirical analysis of the questionnaire. student interaction, class climate and learning satisfaction was quantified by using a 35-item scale based on literature study.
The survey data also illustrate that student-content interaction, student-student interaction and student-instructor interaction has positive effects on the student grade, class climate and learning satisfaction. Especially beneficial content, student-student connectivity and student-instructor connectivity are positive effect. This results indicate that the interaction through SNS has positive effects on the class climate and learning satisfaction.
Considering the above results, student interaction through SNS was considered important to learning outcome. Using SNS in education proved to be an effective tool for professional development and for collaboration with students, that can change their rules of the courses and models good pedagogy responsive to student's learning needs.
There are a number of limitations to this study. The first limitation is that the study was conducted on a narrow sample of the overall student population. Another limitation is the student interaction instrument. It is important to note that we measured the construct of interaction through self-report and not actual student interaction.
