Korean main and auxiliary verbs are morphologically equivalent. However, when combined with certain prefinal endings, the latter becomes quite distinct from the former in aspectual and modal meanings and functions. The fact that these two types of verbs look similar poses a serious challenge to Korean language learners, necessitating the investigation of the specific morphological, semantic, and functional contexts in which auxiliary verbs combine with certain prefinal endings.

Thus, this thesis aims to improve the efficacy of Korean grammar learning for non-native Korean speakers by investigating Korean auxiliary verbs combined with prefinal endings in terms of their morphological and syntactic characteristics and of their meaning and function.

In chapter II, we analyze data from sources, such as The Standard Korean Dictionary, Korean textbooks for foreign learners, The List of Words in the Investigation of Frequently Used Modern Korean Words II, and The Report on the Vocabulary Chosen for Learning Korean, to investigate what lists of auxiliary verbs are available from existing research, what auxiliary verbs are used by native Korean speakers in natural Korean language settings, and how auxiliary verbs are introduced and taught in KSL education.

In chapter III, we classify auxiliary verbs according to prefinal endings that are connected to them: type I, type II, and type III. Type I auxiliary verbs are combined with conjunctive endings; type II, conversion endings; and type III, final endings.

Finally, Chapter IV investigates in more detail those auxiliary verbs that have been found in the previous chapter to be restricted in combination or conjugation. These restricted auxiliary verbs were classified into two types: strongly restricted and weakly restricted. The strongly restricted type has only one form and there is no conjugation. Verbs in this type include “-a/eo gajigo,” “-(eu)lkka bwa,” and “-da(ga) mothayeo.” On the other hand, the weakly restricted type has two or three conjugational types, and it includes “-go nani/namyeon/naseo,” “-go boni/bomyeon,” and “-go haeseo/hani.” Regarding these restricted types, this thesis suggests that KSL textbooks and Korean language dictionaries must include not the base forms but the concrete conjugational forms of these restricted verbs.
