The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of school violence, domestic violence, and depression-anxiety on adolescent suicide, and to investigate the relationship between these factors which was differed from regions, gender and school types. By using systematic sampling, 51 middle schools and 49 high-schools were selected from the whole middle and high-schools in 18 cities of Gyeongsangnam-do. 5400 students from the selected schools were carried out surveys about school violence, domestic violence, depression-anxiety and suicide, 18 copies to each grade, total 54 copies. Through these surveys, by excluding lack of answering, double answering or not answering surveys, we used 4773 surveys for analyzing. We used SPSSWIN 15.0 program for data analyzing, applying analysis of frequency, t-test, analysis of variance, regression analysis and path analysis. The results of this study were as follows.
First, there was no regional or gender difference in domestic violence, but the middle school students have more domestic violence than the academic high school students or the special-purpose high school students. Neglecting in home was higher in the provinces than in the cities, higher in boys than girls, and higher in the special-purpose high school than in the middle schools or academic high schools. These results signified that domestic violence is relatively high in middle school, and neglecting in home is relatively high in special-purpose high school.
Second, the depression-anxiety was higher in girls than boys, higher in the high school students than in the middle school students, and the highest in the special-purpose high school. In other words, depression anxiety is high in girls and the high school students.
Third, damage of school violence was higher in boys than girls, and the middle school students than the academic high school students or special-purpose high school students. Doing school violence was higher in the province than the cities, higher in boys than girls, and higher in the middle schools than the academic high schools and special-purpose high schools. This revealed that both damage from school violence and doing school violence were severe in middle school students.
Fourth, there were no differences in suicide tendency regionally or in the types of schools, but the girls showed higher suicide tendency than the boys.
Fifth, among the relative effects of school violence, domestic violence, and depression-anxiety on suicide, depression-anxiety was the most influential factor, followed in order by domestic violence, damage of school violence, doing harms on school violence, and neglecting in home.
Sixth, by observing the pathway of how school violence, domestic violence, and depression-anxiety effect on adolescent suicide, domestic violence oneself had direct influence on adolescent suicide, but it also had indirect influence through depression-anxiety, doing school violence, and getting damages from school violence. In addition, neglecting in home had indirect influence on suicide but it also had negative effects on suicide.
Seventh, it was inappropriate when the best course model which explains about relationship among domestic violence, depression-anxiety, school violence, and suicide in adolescent applied as it is by regions, gender, school types. This means that the best ideal explanatory model which explains about relationship among domestic violence, depression-anxiety, school violence, and suicide in adolescent can be changed by adolescent’s social and environmental circumstances. This suggested that differential approach considering differences in regions, gender and school types should be essential in order to understand relationship between adolescent suicide and related factors about it.
Lastly, the implications and limitations of the results of this study and the suggestions for further research were discussed.
