The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a bibilotherapy program using picture books on the emotion regulation and peer relationship of young children.
The hypotheses were as follows: First, bibliotherapy program using picture books will improve young children's emotion regulation. Second, biblio-therapy program using picture books that handled positive solution from conflicts of peer relationship will improve peer relationship of young children.
The subjects were a total of 35 young children consisted of 17 young children who were assigned as the experimental group, and 18 young children who were assigned as the control group located in Dongducheon city, Gyeonggi-do.
Children were asked to rate the following two instruments; The Emotional Regulation Scale(Cho, 2007) on a multi-choice question and, Interactive Peer Play Scale (PIPPS) deviced by Fantuzzon, Manz & McDermott(1998) and translated by Jeong, hyun-bin(2011) was used for measuring the rating-scale in the peer play interactions.
The bibliotherapy program using picture books was executed twice a week, 12 times total. For the analysis of collected data, SPSSWIN 19 program was used to calculate the technical statistics of each variable, and in order to find out the diffirence between experimental group and control group, t-test and paired t-test were conducted.
The results of this study are as in the following.
First, Both all sub factors of the other emotional regulation such as the other emotional regulation and self emotional regulation showed significant differences between experimental group and control group.
Second, all sub factors of peer relations such as play interaction, play disruption, and play disconnection showed significant differences between experimental group and control group.
These results in this study imply that bibliotherapy program using picture books could be useful approach to improve young children's emotion regulation and peer relationship. Based on this study, it is needed continuous study in quantitative and qualitative level in the field of bibliotherapy program.
