In modern society where the interest in business competitiveness and productivity improvement gets higher in a rapidly changing management environment, the effective communication between organizations, departments and members is important.
Because now the companies know the fact that they cannot survive in the era of unlimited competition without any business performances better than before, the companies emphasize everyday that the strategic communication is essential in order to get the better financial performances. Likewise, the importance of the relation between the communication and the result inside company has been continued, and according to the application type of this communication in organization, it can affect the growth potentiality as well as the effective management of organization. Every organization has its own contact pattern between members depending on the characteristics of organization such as organizational structure, organizational culture and organization form, and it affects the behavior and attitude of members and its productivity directly and indirectly depending on the type of communication. So it needs to understand the characteristic of organization and the type of communication and to establish the proper communication for its effective utilization.
According to the previous researches, the research on the type of communication focused on the personal change of attitude and their performance such as job satisfaction, organizational commitment and job performance. But the research on the relation between the type of communication and the performance at the organizational level comprehensively in order to improve the company’s competitive advantage which is the ultimate common purpose of every company is insufficient, and in addition to this, because the various organization cultures of companies affect the type of communication of their members directly, it is important to investigate the competitiveness depending on the suitability of the type of organization culture. Nevertheless, it is insufficient to make these researches clearly empirical.
In order to investigate this limit empirically, this research analyzed 2011 HCCP the 4th investigation data collected by Korea Research Institute for Vocational Education and Training. For this analysis, the survey was conducted for total 454 companies and 10,064 workers.
This research verifies first if the type of organization communication(vertical communication, horizontal communication) has an impact on business competitiveness and then analyzed the effect on business competitiveness multilaterally in case of the interaction between the type of communication and the type of organizational culture(hierarchical culture, relation culture, innovation culture, task culture).
As a result of empirical research, as the vertical communication and the horizontal communication became more active, the business competitiveness was improved. In other words, the vertical communication and the horizontal communication improves the business efficiency due to the effective communication and participation between members and departments inside and outside of organization, and it brings about quality improvement and customer satisfaction and contributes to the development of business productivity. But the interaction between the type of communication and the type of organization culture had a moderating effect only in some types of organization culture. Especially, as the hierarchical culture becomes stronger, the vertical communication and the horizontal communication had a negative effect on business competitiveness to weaken the influence of business competitiveness. In case of relation culture, the vertical communication had a positive effect on business competitiveness, so as the relation culture becomes stronger, the business competitiveness was improved.
This research expanded the access method of existing researches and discovered the interaction between the type of organization culture and the type of communication, and through this process, the fact that the effect on business competitiveness has a different strength according to the type of culture could be obtained on the basis of empirical evidence. With this theoretical base, companies need to establish the desirable organizational culture in order to strengthen their competitiveness, and according to the characteristics, they need to set up the type of communication between members and to investigate its utilization method. In addition to this, because this research examined the relation of business competitiveness focusing on the type of communication, the future researches need to expand the communication area such as the department of organization and the characteristics of task.
This research is to encourage the members to utilize the proper communication type according to the management environment for the achievement of corporate goal, and as a result, it will contribute to the creation of corporate value and it is expected to suggest the guideline for the development of the organization communication research afterwards.
