This study aims to reduce the occurrence of quitting or turning over a job by increasing job satisfaction in workers and promoting the importance of reflecting the career paths of job seekers.
To achieve this purpose, this study discusses how perceiving a calling affects job satisfaction among adult workers and investigates the mediating roles of living a calling, which is the intrinsic motivation in the relation. Based on previous researches and theoretical considerations, this study set up a multi-mediate model that analyzes the mediating roles of living a calling, which is the intrinsic motivation in relation with perceiving a calling to job satisfaction, and investigates goodness of fit and statistical significance test.
The research questions were set up as follows: First, How are perceiving a calling and living a calling relative growth within the effect of calling on job satisfaction and intrinsic motivation? Second, what is the effect of perceiving a calling on living a calling, intrinsic motivation, and job satisfaction among adult workers? Third, do living calling and intrinsic motivation of parameters within relation perceiving a calling and job satisfaction?
To answer the research questions above, this study followed the research procedures, which are as follows: First, subjects of inquiry were 462 male and female adult workers (out of 472). For the measurement tools, Calling and Vocation Questionnaire (CVQ), Living Calling Scale (LCS), Intrinsic Motivation Inventory (IMI), Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire (MSQ) were used. Also, for the analysis of the results, correlation of variables, deduction of R² and β using SPSS 18.0, and the package as formed by summing up the items based on factor loading were used. Also, the goodness of fit of the measurement model, research model and the alternative models were confirmed by AMOS 18. In addition, testing the indirect and significant parameter effects in the selected best model has been conducted through the bootstrapping method. As a result, the measurement model, research model, and the second alternative model have been deemed appropriate for the data of the study (first alternative model was not appropriated). However, the second alternative model appeared to be significantly better than the research model and was significant at all paths. For this reason, the second alternative model was selected as the final model and was used during the analysis.
The major results of the study were as follows: First, living a calling has better effects than just merely perceiving it in relation with the calling, intrinsic motivation, and job satisfaction. Second, perceiving a calling had statistically significant effects on living a calling, intrinsic motivation, and job satisfaction. Third, living a calling and intrinsic motivation did mediating role in the relation. However, living a calling mediates between perceiving a calling and intrinsic motivation not job satisfaction on second alternative model.
The results of this study could be applicable to counseling for adult workers. Counselors help to practice perceived a calling in their workplace and to develop intrinsic motivation and job satisfaction. Moreover, they can help to search for the calling of clients who are still unaware of it and to help those who do not practice their callings by getting the obstacles out of the way.
