1. Purpose
The self-concept has a direct effect on the individual behaviour, nature and psychological health. And the home environment has an important influence the formation of the self-concept. Thus, the purpose of the study is to divide the home environment into two, ie, the status environment and the process environment and to clarify the positive degree and the negative degree and to analyze the difference of the correlationship.
2. Problems and Hypotheses
In adolescents there are physical, social, and psychological changes intensively, and the self-concept that is the core of the nature has powerfully advanced, and there are the stability and the consistency in the individual behaviour. Therefore, this study has to clarify such a self-concept and the relationship between the home status environment and the process environment perceived by it.
The hypothesis to verify through this study are following;
I. It might be the close relationship between the positive degree of the self-concept and the home environment.
① The high-scored group in home status and process variables (HH group) will show the positive self-concept.
② The low-scored group in home status and process variables (LL group) will show the negative self-concept.
II. The self-concept will have a closer concern with the process variable than with the status variable.
① A group of high-scored in home status variable and low-scored in home process variable (HL group) will has a higher self positive score than a group of low-scored in home status variable and high-scored in home process variable.
② The self-concept will have a higher correlation with the hone process variable than the home status variable.
3. Method
To verify the hypotheses, 367 middle school students (males and females) were the subjects sampled by random sampling in Seoul.
And Family Environment Test and Self-Concept Test were used as tools for measuring the relationship between the individual home environment and the self-concept.
In that method, Means, Standard Deviation, Simply Correlation, and T-test were used to compare the self-concept of four groups(HH, HL, LH, LL) classified according to the home status environment and the process environment.
4. Results
① Hypotheses I is verified. In total positive self-score, HH group and LL group (both males and females) showed the significant difference, as P<.001. Also in the low factor of the total positive self score, they showed the difference of high score, as P<.05-P<.01. Thus, HH group showed the positive self-concept, while LL group showed the negative self-concept.
② Hypotheses II is partially verified. In the difference of total positive self score of HL group and LH group, males sowed the non-significant difference, as P>.05, while females the significant difference, as P<.05. Also concerning the low factor of total positive self score, male LH group revealed the difference of higherscore than male HL group in self-acceptence, moral ethical self, and social self, as P<.05-P<.01, while female LH group revealed the difference of higherscore than female HL group in self-acceptance, self-behaviour, physical self, moral ethical self, family self, social self, as P<.05-P<.01.
③ Hypothese II-② is verified. The correlation coefficient of total positive self score and the home process environment score showed higher correlation than that of total positive self score and the home status environment score. And it was proved significant as P<.001.
5. Conclusion
① There is a clear difference of a positive degree of self-concept between HH group and the LL group in both males and females. While HH group has the positive self-concept, LL group have the negative.
② LH group has partially higher self positive score than HL group in both males and females.
③ The individual self-concept has the closer correlation with the home process environment than the status environment.
④ The formation of the self-concept influenced by the process than the status environment has the closer correlation with females than ma1es. Therefore, it is differently influenced by, the environment according to sex.
