The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of mother's personality, marital relationship, and relationship with children on happiness, to explore alternatives to uplift mothers' happiness, and finally to present baseline data for educational and counselling program for their parents. The subjects of this study were 349 mothers of 3, 4, and 5 years old children attending 5 different nursery schools located in Cheongju city. 349 questionnaires were used for final analysis.
The collected data in this study was analyzed through SPSS 12.0 and AMOS 7.0. The statistical analysis such as frequencies, percentages, as well as reliability analysis, validity analysis, factor analysis was performed. Also, t-test, F-test, and Scheffe post hoc test were practiced for difference verification. Pearson's product moment correlation coefficient was used for correlations among variables, and AMOS 7.0 was used for path analysis.
The results of this study were as follows:
First, there appeared to be a difference in marital relationship according to spouses' level of education and monthly income. It showed that the higher level of education more than college the spouse had, and the higher their monthly income was, mothers perceived marital relationship more highly.
Second, it indicated that there was a difference in mothers' life satisfaction according to spouses' level of education and monthly income, in positive emotion according to monthly income and whether or not they had a job, and in negative emotion according to monthly income and spouses' level of education. It showed that the higher monthly income was and the higher level of education spouse had, the higher life satisfaction mothers had, while the higher monthly income was and when mothers had a job, the higher positive emotion of mothers was. Also, it appeared that the higher family's monthly income was and the higher negative emotion of mothers According to spouses' level of education, there appeared to be difference in life satisfaction and negative emotion. It showed that the higher level of education the spouse had, the higher mother's life satisfaction was, while the higher level of education the spouse had, and the higher monthly income was, the lower mother's negative emotion was.
Third, it showed that neurosis of mothers with young children had a direct effect on marital relationship and life satisfaction, while it didn't have effect on relationship with children, but marital relationship had a direct effect on relationship with their children. Also, it appeared that agreeableness and openness had a direct effect on marital relationship, relationship with their children, and life satisfaction. Therefore, it concluded that the better marital relationship and relationship with their children was, the higher life satisfaction was.
Fourth, it demonstrated that neurosis, agreeableness, and openness among personalities of mothers with young children had a direct effect on marital relationship in that the higher neurosis mother had, the lower their marital relationship was, whereas the higher agreeableness, and openness they had the higher their marital relationship was. It showed that neurosis among personalities of mothers was the most influential on mother's marital relationship.
Fifth, it indicated that mother's marital relationship had a direct effect on relationship with children, and it's effect on relationship with children was the most.
Sixth, it concluded that mother's marital relationship and relationship with children had a direct effect on life satisfaction, positive emotion, and negative emotion, and had an indirect effect on them by the medium of personalty characteristics.
Finally, this study concluded that there was a partial difference in sub-variables of happiness in examining the effects of mother's personality, marital relationship, and relationship with children on mother's happiness. Also, this study has a significant implication in that it dealt with mother's happiness with causal model.
