The aim of this study is to show the Influence of Kouksundo practice on the physical self-concept and mental health of adults. Using the survey questionnaire instrument, results gathered from 232 Kouksundo adult practitioners showed:
1. Kouksundo practice has positive influence on the physical self-concept, except endurance and muscular strength, of 232 Kouksundo practitioners.
2. Kouksundo practice has positive influence on the mental health of the practitioners.
3. The physical self-concept of the practitioner’s gender shows meaningful differences in terms of health and disease, sports and competence, and endurance.
4. The physical self-concept of the practitioner’s age shows meaningful differences in sports competence and flexibility.
5. The physical self-concept of the practitioner’s job shows the meaningful differences in terms of health and disease, and endurance.
6. Kouksundo practice as applied to physical self-concept shows meaningful differences in all factors except self-esteem.
7. The analysis according to Kouksundo practice level (dan-beup) as applied to physical self-concept shows meaningful differences in all factors except body fat and slimness. The analysis according to Kouksundo practice level (dan-beup) as applied to mental health shows meaningful differences in all factors. Joongki dan-beup level shows more meaningful differences than Kouksundo practitioners with higher practice level.
8. The relation between 28 factors of physical self-concept shows meaningful differences in 24 factors except four factors.
It is said that adults practicing Kouksundo shows meaningful relationships between 28 factors of physical self-concept. As a result, continued Kouksundo practice has good influence on the physical self-concept and mental health of adults.
Korea has two big problems: (1) the budget increase for public welfare by the government, and, (2) the rapidly increasing aging population. Therefore, Kouksundo practice is an alternative way to foster the physical and mental health of the aging population, as well as adults in general.
