The purpose of this research is to understand the relationship between self-esteem and school adaptation of specialized high school students.
The research period was from July 12th to 19th, 2013. The objects of the research were 250 male and female students from K specialized high school in Kwangmyung, which is small and medium sized city. The questionnaire for testing self-esteem and school adaptation were used. The results are as follows;
First, according to the analysis of correlation between self-esteem and school adaptation of male students, self-esteem and school adaptation showed a significant static correlation. The male students showed high correlation between relation of friends and social confidence. This means that better relation of friends one has, higher social confidence one possesses. In other words, this result directs that good relation of friends in one's adolescence is essential for the development of normal sociality. In addition, social confidence showed high correlation with family confidence, which directs that parenting attitude in one's family highly influences one's social confidence. For adolescents, self-esteem development is mainly affected by family factor and social factor. Among the two, the strongest factor is the influence from one's parents in the family. That is, adolescents who were raised under the positive parenting attitude result in better self-esteem development. On the other hand, relation of teachers and relations of friends, relation of teachers and school course adaptation, relation of teachers and school rules adaptation showed strong correlation. This implies that a student who has positive relationship with teacher has positive relationship with friends and shows better adaptation to school courses and rules. That is, for the male students, relation with teachers is the most important factor for school course adaptation and school rules observance.
Second, according to the analysis of correlation between self-esteem and school adaptation of the female students, self-esteem and school adaptation showed a significant static correlation. The female students showed high correlation between relation of friends and social confidence just like the male students. This means that better relation of friends one has, higher social confidence one possesses. The result also shows the importance of good relation of friends in one's adolescence In addition, social confidence showed high correlation with family confidence, which directs that parenting attitude in one's family highly influences one's social confidence. The school confidence showed strong correlation with school courses adaptation. This implies that the student with better adaptation to school courses feels stronger competence for oneself. That is, school grade affects the school confidence. On the contrary, there was not any correlation shown between school confidence and school courses adaptation for the male students. Meanwhile, relation with teachers showed strong correlation with relation with friends, school courses adaptation, school rules adaptation. This directs that the better relationship with teachers commonly affects better adaptation to school courses, relation with friends, and school rules.
Third, the correlation between self-esteem and school adaptation according to sex difference of students shows that only in the factor of overall self-esteem, the male students resulted stronger correlation than the female students. For the rest of the sub-factors of self-esteem and school adaptation, there was not any sex difference shown. The result that the male students showed slightly stronger correlation seem to be due to psychological features of adolescence because the overall self-esteem is general estimation of oneself. Especially, the female students' self-esteem decreases when they enter high school. This is because of adolescence working as a cause for stress which do negative effects to the students psychological adaptation. Girls in adolescence are too much concerned about their physical attractiveness, relationship, academical accomplishment, and popularity among peer groups so that their self-esteem is damaged. This reason resulted in the female students' stronger self-esteem than the male students.
