The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of physical activities for the promotion of basic physical fitness on young children's physical self-concept and social behaviors. Based on the purpose of this study, the following research questions were set.
1. What effects have physical activities for the promotion of basic physical fitness on young children's physical self-concept?
2. What effects have physical activities for the promotion of basic physical fitness on young children's social behaviors?
This study was conducted with 40 children aged 5 in two kindergarten classes
located in Daejeon. The children were divided into two groups : the experimental group 20 (male: 10, female: 10) and control group 20 (male: 10, female: 10).
Verification tools used for this study were physical self-concept scan tool and sociality scan tool. The mean and standard deviation of pre-test and post-test were analysed to compare the experimental group and the control group using SPSS. Windows 21.0 program. The t test was used to analyse variation of the mean values to verify the difference between the groups.
Conclusions based on the results of this study were as follows.
First, for the effects of physical activities for the promotion of basic physical fitness on young children's physical self-concept, the overall physical self-concept scores were significantly higher for experimental group compared with the control group. In addition, for the sub-areas of physical self-concept such as physical appearance, physical fitness, health and competence, the scores were also significantly improved for experimental group compared with the control group.
Second, for the effects of physical activities for the promotion of basic physical fitness on young children's social behaviors, sociality measuring points were significantly higher for experimental group compared with the control group.
In addition, for the sub-areas of social behaviors such as social cooperativity, understandability of others, autonomy and peer interaction, the scores were also significantly higher for experimental group compared with the control group.
In summary, it is concluded that physical activities for the promotion of physical fitness have positive effects on children's physical self-concept and social behaviors.
