‘Mayo Clinic’ practices patient-oriented service design as a new medical care paradigm and management innovation strategy in the 21st century, believing in ‘the future medical care quality measuring standard is not a medical result but a patient’s satisfaction’. Although Korea is evaluated as well equipped with medical care system to a world standard, due to the deficiency of the software in contrast to the hardware inflation, it is not achieving to its satisfaction in raising the satisfaction level of the medical care patients.
To patients a hospital is perceived as a place enclosed with white walls and desolate space with green cross within, an authoritarian scary space, where they stay. So far the uniformly used white doctors’ gowns and their green operating gowns, as the symbolic authority of the medical care world, put off the general patients. There are many people unscathed with no physical defects who feel their heart beat being raised with their blood pressure rising with some sort of tension or fear simply by going to a hospital and seeing the white gowns there, which describes “white coat syndrome.”
Such hospital environment doesn’t help but obstruct in the patients’ psychology and emotions, interfering with the mutual relationship building as warm and positive experiences. As a result of field researching a few hospitals, a representative problem was found as “lack of communication between the patients and the medical care group.”
I state that the ‘hospital uniform’, as a software element among the hospital service channels, plays an important role in all treatment processes in terms of mutual communication. Considering the medium to small sized hospitals suffering from their management problems, the medical care service strategy through the hospital uniforms’ will be the best optimum solution to bring ‘the most medical care service effect with the least cost.’ Thus, this study examines the hospital environments in the perspective of fashion, with the uniform as communication medium. Then it developed the uniform design prototypes and tested them through the real model application and part use tests to verify them in terms of their justification and effectiveness as a ‘uniform design service’ strategy.
We find a meaning of this study in providing an opportunity for the virtuous cycle that it recognizes the importance of the hospital uniforms’ role plays in the patient-medical care group communication as a visual emotional product, promoting the patients positive experience and optimizing the medical care to raise the patients’ satisfaction level. At the same time, by establishing the differentiated hospital identity and it image, it can be an effective means to raise its value. In this respect the study redefined the hospital’s face ‘CI’ to be ‘Communication Identity’, instead of its dictionary term ‘Corporate Identity’.
On the other hand, in the general fashion business world that concentrates on the styling, I hope that ‘service design’ can be used as an innovative strategy based on the customer needs to create new experiences, ‘a methodology or a tool’ for fashion design.
