The study is about college students outlook on marriage and their will to give birth. We will examine their value on marriage and childbirth, and thereby attempt to provide baseline data to make an alternative plan which the proper birthrate can be kept and which the low birthrate problem can be solved. Thus, I conducted a survey of 500 single men & women college students who are attending universities in Jeonbuk province area on college students outlook on marriage and their will to give birth
In the survey, for the value on marriage, subcomponents included meaning of marriage, choosing conditions and ways to select a spouse, marital process, life planning and view of marriage. For the will to give birth, they included personal aspect, familial aspect, economic aspect and political aspect. In addition, individual items regarding to childbirth and marriage were added to investigate.
The research result is summarized as follows.
Firstly, as college students take marriage, it is a complementary relation. The survey shows that they must have an economic ability in order to get married. It also shows that time to get married is when an eligible mate appears and that marriage is considered as a choice, not a must. The common condition which both men and women considered as the most important thing when choosing a partner was character. There was a difference of the opinions between men and women. In other words, men placed a higher priority to affection and appearance and women to economic ability and affection.
College students opinion about childbirth was that it is an obstacle to their social status or self development and that they should postpone giving birth or do a little hard thinking about it when there is no one to take care of their child. In addition, they suggested it is difficult for them to have children if they have a disadvantage in the workplace due to giving birth, and the survey indicates that they believe the necessary condition in child rearing is a flexible working circumstance.
Regarding to having a child, a majority of students thought that it is essential, and many of them expected to have a first child at the age of 30 to 34. The ideal number of children turned out to be 2.18. The number of students who are willing to continue their work life after parenting was the greatest, when they were asked whether they continue pregnancy and their work life. Most of the students thought that the one which controls fertility is their own will and the most response was that economic support for raising the kids contributes to strengthen will to give birth. That is, when giving birth is an obstacle to their work life or self development, and without anyone who takes care of their children or economic ability, they consider that they should postpone childbirth or do a little hard thinking about it. Nevertheless, they said they need their children when they marry.
Secondly, for the outlook on marriage(whole) depending on general background variables, in case of men, it turned out that there is a statistically significant difference in matters concerning whether or not they fulfilled their military duty and religion. The will to give birth(whole), which depends on general background variables, turned out to have statistically significant difference in gender and the number of brothers and sisters.
Thirdly, college students who hold an optimistic view of marriage in a correlation between the view of marriage and the will to give birth showed a strong will to give birth. But the more changed modern values on marriage they exhibit, the weaker will to give birth they are likely to show.
Fourthly, in the effects by related variables on the will to give birth, view of marriage turned out to be more influential than general background variables, In other words, when college students decide whether they give birth, their will to give birth depends on what their view on the meaning of marriage is, what kind of form they consider marriage in choosing their partners, or in the process to get married and life design, or how they perceive marriage rather than general background variables.
Based on the conclusion above, college students turned out that the more optimistic view on marriage they hold, the stronger will to give birth they have. However, this will seems to suggest that they will give birth when someone solves a problem to raise children, they have an economic ability to raise their children and giving birth isn't an obstacle to their work life or self development, Therefore, value education through school education, social education system and mass media is required in order to have an optimistic view of marriage. and improvement, including building social infrastructure for raising children and a flexible working circumstance is demanded.
