『황제내경』오행론의 형성과 전개

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 논문은 『황제내경』(이하 『내경』)에 나오는 오행론에 대한 의문에서 비롯되었다. 첫째, 오행의 의학적 활용이 시작된 시기와 과정에 대해서는 알려져 있지 않지만, 『내경』에는 이미 다양한 이론표현들이 나타나고 있다. 과연, 그 내용들은 어느 시기에 등장한 것들이며, 어떠한 의학적 가치를 함의하고 있었을 까? 둘째, 『내경』의 오행론이 춘추전국시기에 형성된 것이라는 일반적 인식은 재고되어야 할 것으로 본다. 『내경』의 문헌사적 특성은 그 속에 나타난 이론들의 완전성을 보장해 주지 않는다. 따라서 그 이론들은 다양한 시대, 다양한 사상적 배경에서 점진적으로 재생산되고 새롭게 재해석되었다고 볼 수 있다. 셋째, 현대에 이르러 『내경』의 오행론은 ‘태극-음양-오행’의 철학적 틀에서 이해되고 있는데, 이것이 『내경』 오행론의 본질을 잘 반영하고 있는지 의문이다.

본고에서는 이러한 의문점들에 대해, 『내경』 오행론의 형성 과정과 그 이론 체계의 특성, 이에 대한 후대의 인식의 변형이라는 세 가지 주제로 나누어 논의하고자 한다. 이를 통해, 『내경』 오행론의 형성은 여러 시대를 거쳐 다양한 사상적, 사회적 변수 속에서 점진적으로 발전해 온 과정을 거쳤으며, 그 핵심은 만물의 순환과 변화를 나타내는 고대의 時 관념과 象數 체계에 의한 이론의 재해석에서 비롯된 것임을 강조하고자 한다. 또한 宋代 이후, 『내경』 오행론은 ‘태극-음양-오행’의 새로운 이해의 틀에서 理를 추구하는 이론체계로 변형되는 과정을 통해 변화하는 시대 환경 속에서 고정되어 있지 않고 새로이 진화한 것임을 밝히고자 한다.

현대에 이르러 오행론의 의학적 활용은 성공적인 것만은 아닌 것으로 보인다. 복잡한 질병현상에 대한 오행의 단순화된 병리 해석은 치료에 장애가 되기도 했다. 오행론의 계승이 시대적 요구와 환경에 따라 진화되어 이루어졌던 점은 현대의 전통의학자들이 인식해야 할 부분으로 여겨진다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study is related to the formation and the transformation of the wuxing theory(五行論) of the Chinese ancient medical classics, Huang Di Nei Jing Suwen(『黃帝內經 素問』, hereafter, Neijing『內經』) and Huang Di Nei Jing Lingshu(『黃帝內經 靈樞』).

Wuxing is one of the foundation ideas from ancient society in China. and it was utilized in various areas including medical. In Neijing, there are a variety of theories of wuxing, but the process and the start time of medical utilization is still not known. In general, the wuxing theory is deemed to be formed already in the Warring States period. But the history of Neijing as an ancient literature does not guarantee the completeness of its theory. Therefore, I think that the wuxing theories of Neijing could have been reinterpreted and reproduced in the new progressive ideological background of various times.

In this thesis, there are three topics of the wuxing theory of Neijing to be discussed of the formation and the essential features of the system, the transformation in its transmission. It inherits a strain of contemporary perception in new era.

First, although the process and the start time of medical utilization of wuxing theory is not known, but a variety of theories are already appearing on Neijing. And according to the history of Neijing, indeed, its contents were not come up at the same time. Therefore, I think that the wuxing theory of Neijing is composed of theories of derived from a variety of theoretical stages from different era. And the variations of wuxing can be regarded from the archetype of the Five-elements to the Wuyun Liuqi theory(五運六氣說, hereafter, Yunqi theory 運氣說). of Eastern Han dynasty.

Second, time(時)-concept such as the four-season concept(四時), month, day etc. is on the base of wuxing contexts in Neijing. I think that it maybe the core concept to give the wuxing idea the identity as a medical theory. And in Neijing, except of the correspondence between wuxing and season, we can find various utilizations based on time and cycling concepts such as four-season, monthly, daily, etc. As a medical theory, wuxing was transformed to meet the unique goal to practice in real situation.

Third, in modern times, the wuxing theory is understood under the frame of ' Taiji(太極) - Yin and Yang - the Five Elements ' , and I wonder whether it reflects the nature and the meaning of wuxing on Neijing. Because the concept of Taiji is not found in Neijing, instead there is Taixu(太虛). I think that this abstract term might have acted key role to make the wuxing theory of Neijing interpreted as philosophical meaning. And This trend have been continued in the next generation.

In modern times, the medical utilization of wuxing theory doesn't always seem to be successful. For a complex disease, sometimes, the simplified treatment and pathology interpretation by wuxing theory have been impaired. It needs to be considered of the fact that the succession of wuxing theory had been evolved under circumstances in the era.
