Industrial craft is a leader of cultural industries a high value-added growth industry that prepares new era and leads the future with high possibility of connecting with other industries optimum for creation of employment and regional special industry most suitable to apply and maintain Korean wave capable of improving quality and identity of cultural life; masterpiece industry to lead global market and potential to grow into matrix of design industry. This leads interests to be higher in crafts every day, but the reality of industrial craft enterprises lacks marketability and commerciality that does not create essential wealth.
Thus, this study intends to construct design management system in industrial craft by studying principles and structure of industrial craft design management in perspective of mechanism. This will eventually help understanding and introducing the importance of new professional management system that focuses on design management, in order to innovate domestic industrial craft businesses and craft industry, strengthen their competitiveness, and create high values.
This study will focus on creating optimum design management system that is suitable industrial craft by setting up design management mechanism of industrial craft and examining relationship among mechanisms. In order to achieve the goal of this study, industrial craft design management system was constructed based on set-up of industrial craft design management mechanism through probe study method such as literature research and Focus Group Interview. The key components of this system, which is relationship among industrial craft design management mechanisms, have gone through analysis of actual proof by hypothesis testing research method.
The framework of industrial craft design management mechanism was set up as Design Management Human/Physical Infrastructure Mechanism, Design Management Strategy Mechanism, and Design Management Evaluation Mechanism, with application of components of management mechanism, which are structure, catalyst, and guideline; it is a base of construction of industrial craft design management system in this study. This system was constructed on basis of design management that aims to utilize design as strategic key materials for industrial craft management. Industrial craft design management system is constructed and operated around strategy of industrial craft design management mechanism that sets up based on corporate strategy that is derived from internal and external environment of company. And this system has five components of “Input,” “Process,” “Output,” “Control,” and “Feedback.” Industrial craft design management strategy is built at the stage of “Input,” and industrial craft design management mechanism of Design Management Human/Physical Infrastructure Mechanism and Design Management Evaluation Mechanism that are set based on industrial craft design management strategy is applied in “Process.” The result of introduction of design management is calculated in “Output,” and “Control” organically combines the whole process and holistically controls, in order to constantly analyze and balance the process of Input-Process-Output, in order to get predicted result of calculation by inputting management strategy and it process of industrial craft design management mechanism. Lastly “Feedback” functions as posterior edition that edits or supplements the differences of goals and results, by delivering an evaluated product of introducing design management into “Input” and “Process” steps.
Analysis of actual proof was done on how mechanism and correlation of sub elements affect each other, in order to improve utilization by verifying effectiveness of industrial craft design management mechanism constructed through literature research mentioned above. Verification of hypothesis through planning research model and deriving hypothesis was selected for the method of empirical research. Framework components of industrial craft design management mechanism were utilized for variables: industrial craft Design Management Human/Physical Infrastructure Mechanism and industrial craft Design Management Evaluation Mechanism as independent variable, and industrial craft Design Management Strategy Mechanism as dependent variable.
A survey that targets 178 operators, managers, and/or craft designers of industrial craft businesses, who are, or were students of traditional craft masters course in Seoul National University of Science & Technology was distributed and collected. And 200 copies of questionnaires were distributed to operators, managers, and craft designers of 117 industrial craft businesses, which participated as leased booths at 2010-2013 Craft Trend Fair that Ministry of Culture and Korea Craft & Design Foundation have hosted. The period of survey was from July 1st to August 31st, 2013. Questionnaires were distributed and collected directly.
Researcher utilized SPSS Win 18.0 program to analyze data collected from total 300 copies of questionnaires. Researcher first verified industrial craft design management mechanism through basic statistical analysis, analysis on primary factor, and reliability analysis, and second verification was done with chi verification, correlation analysis, and retrospective analysis.
As result, design manpower of industrial craft Design Management Human/Physical Infrastructure Mechanism appears to be the most important factor to construct industrial craft design management strategy. Above all, experts of craft and professionals with high understanding of design were necessary, and secure supply of experts who understand values of crafts and recognize the necessity of introduction of design was important. In addition, administration of design of industrial craft Design Management Human/Physical Infrastructure Mechanism was the second important factor. Industrial craft Design Management Evaluation criterion from perspective of finance, customer, internal, innovation, and learning were important factors, in order to construct industrial craft management methodology of industrial craft Design Management Strategy, strategy for outcome, and strategy for industrial craft organization and its employees.
By constructing framework of industrial craft design management mechanism built through literature research and analyzing of actual proof, effectiveness of industrial craft design management mechanism that helps constructing industrial craft design management mechanism in accordance with actual management characteristics of industrial craft businesses was verified and its validity was granted. Industrial craft design management system that was developed under such process itself is meaningful for the fact that system was developed for industrial craft businesses’ actual use.
This study’s main goal was to recognize and introduce importance of new professional management system that focuses on design management, to eventually strengthen competency of domestic industrial craft business and craft industry and create high added values. Constructed industrial craft design management system is not only a method of product differentiation, but also a method to improve brand value and create new, innovative business model. And this will greatly contribute to securely maintain predominance in competition by changing brand image as a competitive industry field.
