The goal of this study was to improve athletic performance of golf players based on scientific data and psychological state analysis by verifying differences and correlations between the propensity for the achievement objective of university golfers, competition- oriented anxiety, and exercise flow.
First, a frequency analysis shows the demographic factors and then reliability analysis was carried out to show the factorial analysis among variables. Third, T-tests and One-Way ANOVA were conducted to investigate the differences between the propensity to achievement objective, competition-oriented anxiety and exercise flow according to varying demographic factors. Fourth, correlation analysis was performed to check the relationship between the propensity to achievement objective, competition-oriented anxiety and exercise flow, Finally a multiple regression analysis was performed to examine the influence of the propensity to achievement objective on competition-oriented anxiety and exercise flow.
The demographic data shows that the female players show higher competition-oriented anxiety as well as higher exercise flow. Also, players over twenty-four years old have stronger self-tendency, whereas players between twenty and twenty-one years old have higher competition-oriented anxiety. As a result, the older the players have a stronger self-tendency.
According to self-tendency, task-tendency, cognitive flow, and behavioral flow, professionals show higher scores than amateurs. Whereas the amateurs show higher competition-oriented anxiety than professionals. University golf player's level of awareness about the propensity for the achievement objective, competition-oriented anxiety and exercise flow differs according to the players level.
Players with sports career less than four years show the highest competition-oriented anxiety, which tells us the shorter sports career is the higher competition-oriented anxiety has. Furthermore players over twenty times of participation in competitions show higher self-tendency, whereas the players with fifteen to twenty times of participation in competitions show higher competition-oriented anxiety. It seems that the more competitions a player take part in, the higher self-tendency they have.
Among the propensity for the achievement objective of university golf players, the propensity to self objective has meaningful effect on competition-oriented anxiety. In addition, task-tendency as well as self-tendency affects both cognitive flow and behavioral flow. Competition-oriented anxiety of university golf players has a meaningful effect on the cognitive flow and behavioral flow.
Finally, the demographic factors of university golf players results in different propensity for achievement objective, competition-oriented anxiety and exercise flow while competition-oriented anxiety of university golf players has direct influence on exercise flow, which also becomes a factor affecting the propensity of the achievement objective and exercise flow.
By analyzing the effect that propensity of the achievement objective of university golf players on competition-oriented anxiety and exercise flow, this study aims to expand the existing studies in order to provide golf players with empirical knowledge for better training strategies.
