The purpose of the present study was to empirically investigated the relationship between socially prescribed perfectionism and social anxiety based on the self regulation model. Considering social anxiety is a maladjustment experienced in social situations such as interpersonal relationship, not only intrapersonal factors such as self-doubt, but also interpersonal factors such as external locus of control and social comparison orientation were examined. Particularly, the present study aimed to explore mediating effects of external locus of control, social comparison orientation, and self doubt in the relationship between socially prescribed perfectionism and social anxiety. For this purpose, 402 college students completed questionnaires including Multi-dimensional Perfectionism Scale (MPS), Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale (LSAS), Rotter's Internal-External Control Scale, Iowa-Netherlands Comparison Orientation Measure (INCOM), Life Orientation Test (LOT), and Self-Doubt Scale. As a result, sequential mediating effects of (i) external locus of control and self-doubt and (ii) social comparison orientation and self-doubt in the relationship between socially prescribed perfectionism and social anxiety were found. The present study has implication that, first, it specified underlying processes through which socially prescribed perfectionism influence social anxiety. Second, it empirically explained mechanisms of social anxiety based on the self regulation model. Third, the present study focused on interpersonal factors including external locus of control and social comparison orientation which have not been well-examined in the previous studies on social anxiety. Finally, limitations of the present study suggestions for future investigation were discussed.
