Korean tradition and the importance of local culture has not been
recognized through accepting indiscreet western forms and internationalism,
modernism in the process of modernization. Due to the pursuit of modernity,
lack of seeking identity and exploring locality, and disconnection of traditional
culture, it has resulted in the isolation of construction as well as humane
isolation.
However, we have taken efforts for the restoration of autonomy in the
development of information and technology and rapid economic growth, thearchitectural field has responded to global flows such as seeking specificity
considering human communication and construction, studies on the relationship
between people and cities, local environment.
This study begins from the recognition of social flows of commemoration
occurring from a public point of view in contemporary times. Cultural maturity
to reflect on the pain after the war and interest in the relationship between
architecture and memory have faced with new situations. The concept of
memory and memoriality has changed the meaning of monument, social
atmosphere to deliver cases for the past without manipulating memory has been
formed. Entering contemporary times over modern time, reflection for
construction such as uniform cities began, architectural flows were conducted
excluding placeness relating to essential human needs and value problems.
Therefore, this paper discussed about placeness, and drew what placeness in
memorial buildings meant..
Accordingly, chapter 2 organized the concept of memorial through discussion
about previous studies, etymological studies, analysis of history and change
process as a theoretical consideration for memory and memorial. First of all,
memorial is a concept of pursuing 'eternity' of the memory, the monument as a
specific matter to remember acts as a mediator between the quick and the dead,
between god and people coming from 'grave'. In addition, 'locality' and 'place'
of inherent value were overlooked in diversified architecture circumstances in
contemporary times. Re-recognition on place was needed through understanding
and approach to physical, social, cultural phenomena the place had.
Chapter 3 dealt with the function and role of the memorial hall as one ofcultural facilities in community through theoretical considerations for buildings
called the memorial hall. The history of the memorial hall in Korea begins after
the war over the Japanese occupation, there are memorial halls established due
to political influence. Also, the etymology and origin of the memorial hall begin
from the grave in myths, and it's followed to museum and memorial hall due to
the concept's transformation and change. In Korean memorial halls, character
memorial halls to honor his/her achievements and tribute to it for the figure
account for 70%.
Therefore, chapter 4 conducted theoretical considerations for the meaning and
features for commemorative figures through analysis on the status of character
memorial halls. With respect to the figure memorial hall appeared as idealizing
or making a hero of one figure, it's difficult to do continuous operation and
management due to lack of access to locality. In other words, the need for
approaching to architectural placeness has emerged due to lack of understanding
the times and social life for one figure.
As for the figure memorial hall, a variety of interpretations for memorial
targets through active exchange with the community and R&D of a program
associated with communication with local residents·visitors should be conducted.
This researcher mentions the enhance of the figure memorial hall's role in
preserving culture of community and establishing cultural identity.
