(Abstract)
Purpose: This study aims to investigate the effects of an anger management program utilizing Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) on self-esteem, impulsivity, and anger expression style for juvenile prisoners.
Methods: The research design used in this study was quasi-experimental research with a nonequivalent control group pre-posttest. The participants recruited fifty-four juvenile prisoners who were at a juvenile prison in K city, which was carried out from June 23, 2013 to August 30, 2013. To test the effects of the anger management program utilizing REBT, the participants were divided into two groups, an experimental group (27) and a control group (27). The anger management program utilizing REBT was provided to the experimental group twice a week, for 5 weeks, 60 minutes per each session. The used instruments included a self-esteem scale, an impulsivity scale, and an anger expression inventory. Data were analyzed using Chi-square test, Fisher’s exact probability test, and t-test.
Results: After attending the anger management program utilizing REBT, significant differences were found in self-esteem, impulsivity, and anger-control scores between the experimental group and the control group (t=3.89, p=.000) (=-3.25,p=.002)(t=2.16,p=.037).
Conclusions: The results indicate that the anger management program utilizing REBT enhances self-esteem and anger-control and reduces impulsivity of juvenile prisoners. Therefore, this program could be a good strategy that community mental health nurses can use for re-socialization and prevention of recurrence for juvenile prisoners.
Key Words: Anger Management Program utilizing REBT, Juvenile Prisoners, Self-esteem, Impulsivity, Anger expression style.
