본 연구는 불교 경전의 성지 식물 141종의 분류, 자원적 특성 및 종교적 의미를 밝히고자 수행되었다. 식물은 친숙한 존재로서 종교의 교리를 이해시키는 유용한 도구로 활용되어 왔다. 불교 경전의 성지 식물은 교리의 직접 제시, 상징과 비유, 붓다 생애와의 연관성 등 다양한 방식을 통해 교리의 이해를 도와준다.
불교 경전의 성지 식물 141종은 122속 66과에 포함되어 있다. 콩과에 가장 많은 18종(12.8%)이 포함되어 있으며 벼과에 8종(5.7%), 야자과에 6종(4.3%), 7개과에 각각 4종(19.9%), 6개과에 각각 3종(12.8%), 13개과에 각각 2종(18.4%) 그리고 나머지 37과에 각각 1종(26.3%)이 포함되었다. 성지 식물 141종은 초본으로 55종(39%) 그리고 목본으로 86종(61%) 분류되었다. 초본 식물은 1년생 17종(12.1%), 2년생 2종(1.4%), 다년생 36종(25.5%)으로 분류되었으며 목본 식물은 교목 56종(39.7%), 소교목 3종(2.1%), 관목 27종(19.2%)으로 분류되었다.
성지 식물의 개화기는 6월에 68종(17.5%), 7월에 66종(17.0%), 8월에 49종(12.6%)으로 여름에 집중되어 있으며 겨울에도 33종(8.5%)이 개화한다. 화색은 백색 51종(36.2%), 황색 38종(26.9%),적색 20종(14.2%) 순이었다.
성지 식물 108종(31.9%)이 약용자원으로 이용되며, 관상자원으로 43종(12.7%), 채소자원으로 36종(10.6%), 목재자원으로 33종(9.7%), 과수자원으로 29종(8.6%), 향료 및 향신료자원으로 28종(8.3%), 염료자원으로 14종(4.1%), 유지자원, 수지자원, 기호료자원으로 각각 11종(3.3%), 섬유자원으로 7종(2.1%), 전분자원으로 4종(1.2%), 당료자원으로 3종(0.9%), 밀원자원으로 1종(0.3%)이 이용되었다.

Classification, resource characteristics and religious significance of 141 holy land plant species in Sutra were studied. Plants have been as the useful tool to understand the doctrines of religion . Holy land plants in Sutra help us to understand the doctrine through a variety of ways such as direct presentation of doctrine, symbol and metaphor, relationship with Buddha's life, etc.
141 species of holy land plants in Sutra are included in 122 genera and 66 families. 18 species were included in Leguminosae family(12.8%), 8 species in Gramineae(5.7%), 6 species in Palmae(4.3%), 4 species in each of 7 families(19.9%), 3 species in each of 3 families(12.8%), 2 species in each of 13 families(18.4%), and 1 species in each of 37 families(26.3%). 141 species were grouped in 55 species of herbaceous Plants(39%) and 86 species of woody plants(61%). Herbaceous Plants were grouped in 17 species of annual(12.1%), 2 species of biennial (1.4%), 36 species of perennial(25.5%). Woody plants were grouped in 56 species of tall tree(39.7%), 3 species of arborescent (2.1%), and 27 species of -ⅴ-
shrubs(19.2%).
Flowering was concentrated in summer. 68 species flower in June (17.5%), 66 species in July(17.0%), and 49 species in August(12.6%). 33 species(8.5%) flower in winter. 51 species has white flowers(36.2%), 38 species has yellow(26.9%), 20 species has red(14.2%).
108 species were used as medicinal resources(31.9%), and 43 species as ornamental(12.7%), 36 species as vegetable(0.6%), 33 species as timber (9.7%), 29 species as fruit(8.6%), 28 species as herb/spice (8.3%), 14 species as dye(4.1%), 11 species as oil/resin/recreation(3.3%), 7 species as fiber(2.1%), 4 species as starch(1.2%), 3 species as sugar(0.9%), and 1 species as nectar(0.3%).
