창업에 성공한 북한이탈주민의 경제활동 경험 = Economic Activities of the North Korean Defectors who Have Succeeded in Inaugurating a Business

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 창업에 성공한 북한이탈주민들의 경제활동 경험을 살펴본다. 북한이탈주민이 한국사회에 적응하는 과정에서 가장 중요한 요소 중 하나가 경제활동이다. 경제활동은 북한이탈주민들이 경제적인 안정을 얻는다는 것 이상의 의미가 있다. 첫째, 남한 사회의 한 구성원으로서 적절히 기능하고 사회에 기여할 수 있다. 둘째, 남한사람들과의 일상적 상호작용을 통해서 관계를 맺고 효능감과 소속감을 느낄 수 있는 계기가 된다. 또한 이는 사회의 한 구성원으로 자리매김 할 수 있게 한다. 따라서 남한에서 북한이탈주민들의 취업은 중요하게 다뤄야할 부분이다.
그러나 그 결과는 그리 긍정적이지 못한 것이 현실이다. 문화차이, 직무능력 문제, 남한 주민들의 차별 등이 북한이탈주민들의 안정적인 직장생활에 장애요소로 작용하고 있다.
최근 들어, 북한이탈주민들의 안정적인 경제활동을 위한 또 하나의 영역으로 ‘창업’이 부각되고 있다. 본 연구는 창업에 성공한 북한이탈주민 10명의 경험을 상세하게 소개함으로써, 어떤 삶의 경험을 가진 사람들이 어떤 과정을 거쳐 창업을 시도하는지 살펴본다. 특히 이주민의 적응단계를 크게 5단계로 구분하여 이들의 적응 과정을 ①이주, ②자각, ③조정, ④적응, ⑤정착의 단계로 나누어 살펴보았다. 북한을 이탈하여 중국으로 이주하는 과정과 이를 통해 낯선 환경에서 자신을 자각하고 그리고 다시 한국 사회에 들어와 경제적 안정을 통해 조정하며 적응하는 과정을 통해 정착해가는 과정을 살펴보았다.
본 논문은 이러한 과정에서 겪는 어려움과 그것을 극복하는 과정을 소개하고자 한다. 이는 창업이 이들의 삶에 어떤 함의를 가지는지 살펴봄으로써 창업을 시도하는 북한이탈주민과 창업이 이들의 삶을 어떻게 변화하는지 그 긍정적인 의미를 파악함과 동시에 이를 지원하는 활동가들에게 유의미한 자료를 제공하는 것을 목적으로 한다.

This thesis examines experiences of economic activities of North Korean defectors who have succeeded in inaugurating a business. One of the most important factors for North Korean defectors' adjustment to South Korean society is the economic activity. Economic activity means more than economic stability. Through economic activity, they function as proper citizens and contribute to the society. Moreover, economic activity gives them a chance to establish social relations with South Korean natives through daily interactions and thus to make them feel a sense of efficacy and belonging. Therefore, we need do endeavor to promote economic activity of North Korean defectors.
However, current situation is not very satisfactory. Cultural differences, employee performance and the discrimination against them by South Korean natives function as obstacles to the stable workplace lives of the defectors.
Recently, inaugurating a business has become one of the options for the stable economic activity for the defectors. But inaugurating a business also has a series of challenges. This thesis introduces the experiences of 10 defectors who have succeeded in inaugurating a business. It first introduces the experiences of their economic activities in North Korea, China and South Korea to contextualize their motives to inaugurate a business. Then, it examines the difficulties of the process of inauguration and the meanings of inaugurating a business for defectors' lives. It is desired that the findings of this thesis will serve as meaningful sources for North Korea defectors who plan to inaugurate a business and activists who are helping them.
