The purpose of this study to examine a tendency of maternal child-rearing role practices, child's self-concept, and kindergarten adjustment, and to investigate the relation between maternal child-rearing role practices, child's sel-concept and kindergarten adjustment. For that purpose, the research questions of this study are as follows.
1. How are the maternal child-rearing role practices, child's self-concept, and kindergarten adjustment?
2. How is the relation between maternal child-rearing role practices and child's self-concept?
3. How is the relation between maternal child-rearing role practices and child's kindergarten adjustment?
The subjects of this study were 98 children aged 5 who are attending the kindergarten, their mothers and their classroom teachers. In order to measure maternal child-rearing role practices, 'Parental Education Program: Child-rearing role practices' which was developed by KICCE(2012) was used. Pictorial self-concept scale 'I feel... Me feel" which was Im Chun-gum(1994)'s revision version of Bentley and Yeatts(1974)'s is used to measure child's self-concept. Also, to measure child's kindergarten adjustment, Kim Young-hee's revision version of 'Preschool Adjustment Questionnaire' which was developed by Jewsuwan, Luster & Kostelink(1992) is used. The data collected from this study were frequency analysis, percentage, average, standard deviation, Cronbach's ɑ, and Pearson correlations.
The following is a summary of the conclusions of this study.
First, mothers perceived their maternal child-rearing role practices generally high. Highest to lowest area of maternal child-rearing role practices are basic needs role, developmental·educational role, and social support role. Also, children perceived their self-concept generally high and teachers graded their children's kindergarten adjustment highly. Children's highest adjustment was the adjustment to kindergarten routines and lowest adjustment was ego-strength.
Second, it was shown that the partial correlation between maternal child-rearing role practices and child's self-concept. Mother's basic needs role and child's self-concept were slightly related.
Third, maternal child-rearing role practices and child's kindergarten adjustment were related each other. Maternal child-rearing role practices and child's kindergarten adjustment, ego-strength, positive affect within the school setting, peer competence, adjustment to kindergarten routines were highly related. Also, child's kindergarten adjustment and maternal developmental·educational role, basic needs role, and social support role were highly related. Specifically, maternal basic needs role was related with positive affect within the school setting, ego-strength, adjustment to kindergarten routines, peer competence. Maternal developmental·educational role was related with ego-strength, positive affect within the school setting, peer competence, and adjustment to kindergarten routines. Maternal social support role was related with adjustment to kindergarten routines, peer competence, and ego-strnegth.
