The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of the participation in dance sport as a leisure activity of the middle-aged on the subjective health perception, the flow experience and the quality of life. The subjects were composed of 297 participants in dance sport activity in Seoul. Data was collected using a survey questionnaire, with a convenience sampling method. To analyze data, frequency analysis, exploratory factor analysis, reliability analysis, t-test, ANOVA(analysis of variance) and multiple regression analysis were executed by using SPSS 20.
The following results were obtained. First, in the degree of the participation in dance sport, the frequency of participation affected both the subjective health perception and the flow experience, the intensity of participation affected only the behavioral commitment in the flow experience, and the period of participation affected only psychological domain in the quality of life but not the quality of life. Second, the subjective health perception had an influence on both the flow experience and the quality of life. Third, the cognitive commitment in the flow experience had an effect on the quality of life.
As a result, these findings show that the frequency of participation, the subjective health perception and the cognitive commitment affect the quality of life either directly or indirectly. Therefore, the above three variables should be improved in order to enhance the quality of life by participating in dance sport as a leisure activity. In other words, the participants need : (1) to increase the number of participation, (2) to raise the subjective health perception by thinking that they are healthier than other people because dance sport is good for health, (3) to possess the cognitive commitment associated with psychological and emotional factors such as enjoyment, a sense of accomplishment and subjective satisfaction, which are obtained through dance sport.
